Stanton Warriors // Audio

What a large night

It had been a while since I had seen Krafty kuts spin, cut, chop and generally scratch the decks to pieces. So in all honesty I was quite looking forward to seeing what 2005’s best DJ had been doing this year. So the usual Brighton fusion crew made there way to Audio to see the two promoters play alongside the mighty Stanton Warriors.

First up Skool Of Thought, who seems to impress everytime he plays. With his big bootleg of La Luna’s – to the beat of the drum set to blow up out of all proportion this week, his warm up set couldn’t have been better timed. As usual it was a tightly mixed affair brushing upon most current styles of the break. Highlight easily had to be hearing that Lee coombs back to the Phuture remix of ‘Robert Armani – Circus Bells.’ That track is absolutely spot on. It represents just about every single thing thats good about the current breaks scene. Big sirens, squelchy distorted bass, and, of course a healthy amount of acid (that you really have to wait for btw…). Thats got my breakspoll vote.

Anyways…The set was good, got the crowd mooching and filled the dancefloor. So much so that when Krafty Kuts stepped upto the 1’s and 2’s you had trouble to squeeze your way in, let alone dance.

I havn’t seen much of Krafty recently. Infact since the loose cannon’s remix I don’t think I remember seeing his name on a record? Then, we get insane bangers 3, the Ian Van Dahl remix on Deepcut and allsorts of rumours of remixes and bootlegs etc. Aparently the rage against the machine thing is his work…but I assumed it was Freq Nasty??? Any Ideas anyone?

Anyway…So krafty starts the set in the usual way, with a big mash up track and some vox from the inspiring TC Izlam. Leads us on with some hip hop and slowley picks up the tempo for some octane fueled breaks. All the while bringing the scratches and the Accapella’s. Some people like it, some don’t…You decide.

For some reason the sound system in audio didn’t seem right that night. I dont know whether they employed a new cleaner, who cleaned the mixing desk and changed all the levels or just simply forgot to turn it up loud enough? But it was no where near the usual full sounding, volumous experience that you get from an Audio night. Bizzare?

That aside Krafty throws on some bass rumbling new tracks that impress, plays that Todd Terry – ‘Can You Feel It?’ trouble soup mix and simply put blows the place up. And again I gotta admit, thats a hell of a remix and a hell of a sound. So all in all Krafty played some blinding tunes, and as always his mixing was crisper than a bag of walkers, the Accapella’s were well placed and the crowd loved it. The only thing I wasn’t keen on was sharp cutting out of a tune as it peaks and drops. It’s just not an effect i like. Still…

Next it was headline time. Again only the singular Stanton was present but he bought with him a mic and an MC to use it. Which went down a storm. As always the point of an MC is always to add to the music. Whether they are rapping a verse or two, or just hyping the crowd up. Which this guy did to perfect effect.

Dom Stanton played as moody a set as i have ever seen from him. Which impressed. Although the bootlegs and cheeky samples were there, everything from the tempo they were played at (Its amazing how different a tune sounds just a few bmp slower???) to the mixing itself conjured a broody much more spacey, atmospheric vibe than what you usually get from a Stanton Warriors party. And this only made the whole experience more enjoyable. The BIG ‘Get Koch’ remix sounded good, as did the comparitively bouncy ‘Blue.’

And he done a beautifully worked pitch change during ‘Dooms night.’ Slowing it right down and fucking with it, then bringing it back up for the peak. I saw Freq Nasty do this at Glasto a couple of years back with ‘Amped.’ Slowed it down at the drop and mixed in the same tune at double time…Wow…One to remember!

Mind you as the Honey club is closed I saw a fair few cock zips in there that you wouldn’t normally find. I spoke to one guy who was really upset, infact he was gutted because he had to spend his 25th birthday at Audio watching these fore-mentioned awesome DJ’s smash together moving sets of interesting, exilerating breaks, rather than at the Honey club, with there now legendary R&B room. ((sic)and no word of a lie!) I guess there’s just no pleasing some people?

Still all in all a good night was had by all. And again Supercharged show cases some of the finest breaks talent there is. No messing, talented, quality DJ’s. And thats what Brighton loves.

Check it out Wednesday.
