So last night was Saturday and we headed on down to the bleeps night at the Ocean Rooms. After another night of penniless yet harsh bingeing and social-binting I’m now left writing an article on Sabbath. As we all know I should really be resting my soul. Do I not deserve it? None the less I shall pass my god deserved needs aside and remain, drunkenly shaking, on the task at hand – Magda.
Magda is appearing at the OR thanks to the cunning fellas at Bleeps. Know if you’ve been hiding under a rock for the past few months or just don’t have a major interest in the so called current events (yes the pope did die (boo hoo)) then these guys will need an introduction. Bleeps are, and I quote: “…a collective of Brighton DJs and promoters”. They have already enjoyed success with two or three parties in Brighton. They’ve even kept Union alive on New Years for the after party and are now coming into their own residency at Sumos. They are spearheading the minimal scene for us late night lurkers offering dark places to dance, mingle and be generally nocturnal. With their residency starting at 2am it seems the “afterparty” club scene is really in for some south-coast awakening. Remember the name: Bleeps.
Magda, the lady herself, had had growing involvement with the minus label founded by Richie Hawtin. She was originally bread in Poland so is a near neighbour to myself and fellow eastern goons. However, like myself, she left the nest and has travelled far since coming to life a blood covered, crying mess. Her music takes influences from Detroit, time living in the big apple, and know home in Berlin – the blend resulting in a minimalist techy laced product that oozes her independent flair. A DJ that upholds what her music is about and will not resort to selling out for a crowd. And doesn’t that just bring a smile to your face? (so you know, I’m smiling). She brings a big bag of acid with her and without thought or justification hands it out to the audience. Magda was an absolute pleasure – I’d find it hard to say the last time I had so much fun on a Saturday night. No joke. She made a seamless transition from Anwar’s pre-set, which could not be flawed in the slightest. Days of working around records and being in touch / current by the second sure as hell pay off in this man. If anyone can get a crowd going it’s him.
Although I have recently had a charm of lightly insulting the Ocean Room’s, I must stress my words should be taken lightly. When the Room’s delivers it sure does provide a hell of a night. The long stretched DJ box placed in such a “hands on” position can be a great advantage over a large stage say at the Concorde. When I saw Jazzy Jeff (don’t take the piss) in the OR he rocked my world, being able to watch his skills unfold. It’s this closeness I appreciate from a venue, all I have to say is, id like to know there’s a crowd to associate with and a vibe to keep me feeding off like a savage mountain goat! Tonight I’d go as far to say that the OR had outdone it self. So far that I shall take most of the bad words back. The place packed up and the atmosphere was fantastic. I’m so pleased to see the place perform to such a standard and only wish it could meet this demand more often.
Magda starting clearing off at around 4 or so, thus we headed to the Bleeps residency at Sumos. Pretty Mexico!! If you needed proof of the effect that Bleeps can have this is it. Sumo’s packed like a Pakistani side street was hustling out tunes to a crowd of late night should-be-in-beds. A mixture of Magda renegades, minimal fans and your always welcome euro clubbers. It’s been a while since I’ve seen people sitting on the floor of a club and it gave me strange flash backs to a squat party along North Street. Gotta love them Spaniards. Such a free vibe and party atmosphere just can not be beaten. Sadly all good things have to end. A fire alarm went off at around 6am so we all had to run out and huddle in the street, at this point to booze keeled us over and a taxi was in need.
If you want a night out that’s different, respectable and downright soiled. You know where to go. Bleep’s.
All in all if I’ve learnt one thing from tonight it’s this: I always knew I had a thing for the Polish! Until next time.
