So here we are- The Fusion crew attending another ‘Supercharged’ mid week, wednesday mash up. This time the beats provided by the formidable dread headed crowd pleaser FreQ Nasty, and resident Sneaky.

I hadn’t seen FreQ Nasty play for years. Last time was at the concorde for Boutique, and that was back in the golden era of breakbeat. When Krafty Kuts gave away the best mix cd ever for free on the front of Mixmag, and ‘Amped’ was probably (and arguably still is…) the greatest breaks tune ever made.

I can never see FreQ Nasty’s name anywhere without thinking of a Dennis Leary skit. Leary is ranting about NyQuil…’Capital N small y big fucking Q. I love that fucking Q dont you? What a great advertising idea, stick a huge fucking Q on the box, they’ll get high and stare at it…I love NyQuil man.’

Well thats just what people do with FreQ Nasty…

Anyway’s I digress…Sneaky started things off. And with the tightest set I’ve seen him play. Excellent tracks, quality mixing and in all honesty as good a warm up set as you could hope to see. It would be interesting to see how much his set changed if he played peak time to an audience. A great start to the night. Lots of Stanton’s tracks featured. The driving ‘Hope time’ stands out. This was one of those tracks that I really didnt seem to get at first. It had been around for ages and ages, and must have taken a year to get a vinyl release from when I first heard it. And if im honest I felt it was a bit of an anti-climax. Then I heard the remix (Rouge Element)…which, unfortunatly, really disapointed me, but, it made me listen to the original in a whole new light, and see it for the classy track it is.

So FreQ Nasty had a lot to live upto. Audio was at boiling point and had more of the atmosphere of a house party than being in a club. The sort of atmosphere that makes Supercharged what it is. At the weekend/monthy gigs this seems to suffer. But go on a Wednesday and you get a true crowd who are there for one thing only. And it works. No where else in the country could you find this on a wednesday night…

Siren’s blazed. A devistating loop of a reverbed air-raid siren took hold of the etherwaves. Now this place really had the feel of an old chicago rave. Then cutting through the high pitched wail came the sweet vocals of Navigator, who leads this track ‘Burn’ – by The Autobots Vs. Screwface. And so it began…

This track, coinsidentally is the opener of the new joint venture CD by Breakspoll and Superhcharged. Other nods were made to the longplayer throughout the night. The awesome Care in the Community Mix of ‘Cutty Ranks’ -Hitman, Future Funk Squads remix of ‘Splitloop’s’ full vocal version of KFC, and Skool of thought and Ed Solo much anticipated, Prodigy sampling, someone else sampling, ‘When I was a Yout.’ All of which blew up bigtime with the dancefloor purists.

FreQ Nasty, never one to disapoint, played to, and for the crowd. A big Prodigy bootleg got the rewind treatment. Which you can argue against…But to be totally honest, if its done right, everyone loves a proper rewind. And after the burning, bass heavy tracks, FreQ took it slower and lower, playing a pure movement track by Benga (the future of dubstep…). With this slow, hip-hop paced dub blareing out…there was only one thing that could happen -the beats got souced in the once pop, and now anthemic vox of MC Sparks and Kie’s ‘Fly bi’ accapella. After which Mr Nasty just stood smugly back from the decks, and smiled at the crowd, who were now dancing to a different, Dub stepped beat.

But this was just a lull in the proceedings. A truely fine moment was about to happen. Floating around for a good couple of years has been a brilliant CDR bootleg of Goldies ‘inner city life.’ I had never heard it in a club. Until about 1.45am on Wednesday 8th March. Brilliant stuff.

Now…I prefer my breaks a little less bass heavy these day’s. A little more acid, and a fair few less bootlies. But even with that in mind this was a great night. He played purely for the crowd, who loved every track and jumped up with the DJ everytime a big tune dropped. After watching a few DJ’s recently play their own material and stand moodily behind the decks, it was a pleasure to see both FreQ and Sneaky play for the masses and turning a club night into a party.

I had a wicked night. It reminded me why I love breaks so much. FreQ Nasty was great, him and his giant fucking Q.
