A beautiful love child of the transitional club scene with a spunky, rock edge. Had no idea what to expect from this evening, but the offering was a divine collective of funky punk, electro beats with a dirty ass bass line and rasping sexy vocals. Big drum breaks giving everything a deeper pulse. All you could wish for at Stompaphunk. Brighton’s guappos are fronted by Senor Mick, sexy, very enigmatic with a funky poise of Prince but much taller. With the local version of the Chemical brothers…….. the k brothers per say cutting in euphoric rips and tribal bass sounds. Mula live totally blow you away, their presence is bracing and you can’t help but get down like James Brown and commence with some serious shape throwing.
Launching their new single “Her Boyfriend Was the DJ” on the Stompaphunk record label this was a party to celebrate the new arrival….. Slammed in as the crescendo to the evening it was received with crazy bliss from the core following of dedicated fans, strewn at Mick’s feet. Funky breaks, honey melodic cool vocals it’s a beautiful creation and a sure fire disco anthem to greatly anticipated summer round the corner. Audio had fabulous buzz and atmosphere, not packed but the vibe thrown at us from the stage was electric and got the crowd all flash dancing and body popping. A fresh and smiling set of people turned out to enjoy the evening, muso types, A&R types and a dusting of honeys. Bit of a myspace reunion for myself seeing a few faces from the cyber black hole of music promotion and, er, pimping.
Senor is a man that is clearly in love with his vocation in life and looks totally comfortable on stage. And fuck he can dance, a very enigmatic performance delivered with a primitive zeal that’s both seductive and intoxicating. Inviting you in to rock out with him. Dan and Jimmy shakin their butts back him up. I was desperately trying to groove and move in sync with them but hitting the gin too early resulted in me entering in a stable relationship with one of the pillars for the evening- just to know it was there. Fast swaying on a totally natural high of music, no naughty hedonistic club assistance; the set seemed to fly past, leaving us gagging for more.
Joining the boys were Stompaphunk resident DJ’s Lil Dan, David Parr and S’Express house pioneer Mark More. But Mula were with out doubt the Crème Brule of a delicious evening. Its music to dance to and has some seriously sexy samples dropped in that keeps the vibe fresh and animated. Funkadelic vocals smoothed over the sounds make Mula a perfect and rather unique dance floor live set. Gracing abodes such as Turnmills and Global Gathering they are social butterflies of in the dark world of hedonistic, electro nasty music. Worked remix’s on the CD are an orgy of talent with Cagedbaby, Serge Santonio and Radio slave. This deserves to be a staple item on the play list to the debauched antics of sunny days and naughty nights ahead.
Dirty, filthy, electro sex on decks……and it wasn’t just the records getting played.
