What a bizzare night. If I’m honest it seems a bit weird to see a hip-hop crowd in Audio, and a very mixed crowd at that. Unfortunatly this isn’t nessassarily a good thing. Because of Jazzy Jeff’s comerciality you get a whole range of reject’s and reprobates coming to the night who really should do us all a big favor and sign up to go on those one way plane rides.
I wanna round up a few people for this trip. Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, they can get a free plane ride for tricking me into buying their album. Which is about as much fun as fucking a card board box. In fact thats actually more fun than listening to the fucking album. Their label should do exactly what Snoop Dog says and ‘Drop ‘Em Like Their Hot!’ My old manager, he’s on the plane. Sat next to another talentless wankstrap, Bob Sinclair. Or to use his true name Bob ‘Pretentious’ Sinclair. ‘We’re the love generation.’ Here’s the truth Bobby. We’re not. Infact, im pretty fucking cuntish at times. The love I got certainly dont go around a whole generation of people, and definatly doesn’t extend to you. You got a chance and a platform and an opertunity to do something really fucking profound that will still mean something in a 1000 years time and you give us this gem of a record. Love Gener-fucking-ration. Sorry Bob. Your a bibble. My love is reserved for things that inspire me. Like DJ Shadow’s ‘Entroducing…’ and Eva Longoria.
Anyone who knows my views on clubbing will understand how much of the emphasis of a good night I place with the crowd and the people your clubbing with. Ive done my hardcore ‘out every night of the week just for the sake of it’ clubbing. Now the nights I choose to go to I want to get something from. Basically I want to listen to an awesome DJ spin. But I want it hassle free. I certanly dont want a body-popping Muslim slapping me and my friends in the face and poking me in the eye with my own cigerettes. Get out. Ive never seen you in Audio before. Get on the fucking plane.
Anyway. JFB. Cannot say enough good things about him. I’ve known him for a while and he’s a genuinely nice guy. He lets his music do the talking for him, (and Beardyman) and they have developed a really exciting live show. Playing off a laptop – re-sampling and editing Beardyman live and on the fly stands out as somthing inovative that I have never seen done before. Impressive.
His set was filled with all the classic tracks that you’d expect, and some others besides. Starting off mashing up The Mohawks ‘Champ’ and moving swiftly into The Beastie Boy’s ‘Sure Shot’ is as good a place as any to start a set. So many tracks smashed together so quickly has pretty much blurred my memory as to what else he did play, but I have no doubt at all that it was seriously fucking good.
Anyways, Jazzy Jeff was late. As always. When he did turn up it was pretty much an anti climax. Like jumping into bed with Kate Moss and falling asleep. Dissapointing. Dont get me wrong the guys an awesome DJ but the majority of his thunder had already been stolen by JFB. His tune selection was at times uninspired. Stuff like Raekwon’s ‘Ice Cream’ and the mashing it recieved stood out. But some of the tracks were verging on the R&B/Gansta tip of him Hop-Hop. Which again, Dr Dre’s ‘The Chronic’ aside, I tend to distance myself from. Give me MF Doom or Ultramagnetic MC’s anyday of the week.
Jeff didnt really get going or look confortable untill about 3am, when he played on late and started to find a decent flow. The MC’s shone all night. Both Beardyman and the other nameless dude (madskillz) were wicked. If done poorly an MC can really detract from a DJ. But here were two classy examples of how it should be done. One with a classic MC style, the other blended seamlessly into the set. Amazing.
Now, some people in the crowd were a little agitated by the Jazzy one’s late arrival. One person in particular. The guy at front who seemed to think it his place to inform JFB that he needed to get off the decks. This is the kind of thing im talking about. There’s no place for this in my world. The guy’s mind is obviously piffle ridden. Why anyone would be that rude to someone who’s been entertaining a crowd of people so well for a whole night is beyond my paradigm of thought. So for you and your bird, there’s a place on the airplane. Enjoy.
The highlight of the night was watching JFB tear into Ed Solo and Skool Of Thought’s Pablo Gad Remix – When I was A Yout. (Closely followed by the caining that Prodigy’s ‘Breathe’ recieved.) That kind of breakbeat lends itself well to turntablism and perhaps is an untapped market. Definatly something I’d like to see more of.
So all in all a mixed night. Too many wankers managed to scrape together the extravagent door fee and get themselves let in for me to really enjoy it, Jeff was a bit of non-starter, but JFB stood out.
Well im gonna slap on some DJ Shadow and check and see what time that planes due to take off. Oh…looks like G-Unit have just got on…Today is a good day.
