Well, this turned out to be a truly bizarre night. Usually when the Fingerlick’n crew join forces with the Supercharged guys, you expect a party of epic proportions. Unfortunately, for me anyway, this time they failed to deliver.

It is at this point I’m gonna add that at some stage during the night I was spiked with a downer. I was barely able to stand on the dance floor and was so tired my eyes were unable to stay open. So this may have tainted my opinion.

But from what I do remember, it kicked off with another interesting melodic, techy set from local hero Skool Of Thought. I’m genuinely impressed with this new mellower style of set that is being developed by Skool and I think it shows how broad and encapsulating the breakbeat genre has become.

Taking over from Skool’s nicely balanced set were label owners Soul Of Man. Who were genuinely as disappointing and uneventful as you could get. I was hugely let down by the sheer journeyman nature of the set. Too housey, too slow. Highlight though was the Stanton Warriors remix of “A Guy Called Geralds” Hacienda classic, “Voodoo Ray”. Fresh but not as fresh as the original. Maybe I’m being unduly harsh here…as this was the point my night turned into a lucid Rohypnoled experience.

Then for the Plumps. Big names in breaks. Legends. Unfortunately they failed to deliver for the first time I had ever seen. Don’t get me wrong: they were by no means bad. Just not on par with their usual excellence. I wanted to hear new strong tracks and total frenzied madness by this point. But all we got were some old tracks, a few new ones and some dirty old bootlegs. Again, maybe I’m just bitter that some idiot felt the urge to fuck with my drinking, but I genuinely don’t remember them being as mind blowing as I’m used to. Although their remix of Fatboy Slim’s “Everybody Needs a 303” is about as pretty and genuinely fucking special as breakbeat gets.

The night won’t stop me from seeing any of these DJ’s again. In fact, I’m looking forward to the next chance, but without meaning to sound greedy, I wanted a little bit more.
