Slackers Convention: Cut La Roc, Hexadecimal, Push DJs, Dirtpop + more. // Concorde2

What’s the night about?
Slackers Convention is a monthly night run by a large group of very unslack & extremely attractive individuals. To quote myself, they are “one of the best and brightest purveyors of the most delectable dance music in Brighton”, opting for breaks, electro, hiphop, electro house, a bit of drum n bass – you know the routine – plus a headlining live act. Nearly a Brighton establishment, Slackers Convention still manages to feel like a party in your sitting room despite the 500+ capacity and three-room sprawl. Open-mindedness a must.

Why did I want to go to the night?
Okay, I’m going to be there regardless because I’m part of the team, but aside from that, I love this night and have done for years. Tonight I was especially psyched to go check out Hexadecimal, more so since I didn’t make it to Breakspoll this year & am still kicking myself. Breakspoll is the definitive — Hexadecimal has gotta be awesome-to-the-max. Also Slackers is one of those places you can make friends and only see at Slackers, which is a good reason to go down again – there’s nice people here.

What did I think of the dj?
DJ(s). I missed Cut La Roc – I was working on the door – but everyone and their dog told me HE WAS AMAZING. Which cuts, you know. No pun intended, obviously. He was doing some live scratching, he was on at about 2am, he almost stole the show….but before him was Hexadecimal. I did catch him. I’d just finished the door and Matt passed me in the bar. “Go check out Hexadecimal – he’s going off!” Oh sweet Jesus. Was this phrase invented for exactly what I witnessed?

Scott from the Hexadecimal (base-16/4 binary bits/H) duo was throwing down some bass-heavy hard-core breaks tunes whose intensity tested the all-mighty power of the Y-Inter Soundsystem and then some. He is the real deal. I prickled with delight when he slapped down Embliss’ “Robots in Disguise (AutØbØts VIP Remix Edit)”, a tune that I’ve been swallowing whole since the Aut0b0ts August mix on Nu Skool Breaks. Scott’s got an edgy, loose energy as a DJ that I enjoyed watching – he’s a hard edgy interesting person, which is what I gathered from talking with him (hapless taxi drivers in Hungary?) – I like that. I stayed in the main room for about four or five very nu-skool breaks tunes that dipped into techno before going to pay respects in the other rooms. The Push DJs were actually pretty hot as DJs & I enjoyed their set so much that I didn’t want to leave. Some people skipped their set & actually just fancied THEM !!! I’m not naming any names (it wasn’t me).

In the bar, there was good line up of DJs. I missed Fyoog, but was pressed up against Lucas & Pav’s (Kinky Robot) set as I worked the door. They played out some very danceable tunes including the Groove Diggerz remix of Sam Hell’s “Stay Out All Night”. I shimmied out of the ticket office & gave them an air high-five every time I approved, which was most of their set. Pete B (Hired Goons) also played a blinding electro-sweetie set, throwing in Josh Wink’s “Higher State of Consciousness” for a wait-for-the-penny-to-drop-on-your-fucked-friends giggle. I was annoyed when I went up to Pete and said, “I enjoyed your set” and his response was “yeah, me too.” Okay, last time I ever go up to anyone and say something nice that I actually mean.

What did I think of the night itself?
Good vibe. The winner of the evening was the main room, which, is the hardest room on a Slackers night to make the magic happen. Loads of old friends turned up & I enjoyed myself. The rugby & other factors meant the club wasn’t to capacity – normally the bar & and the back room do the best on normal nights. Tonight as the line up was too hot, the main room won & I think the other two rooms suffered as a consequence. Until, that is, I got off duty !!

Slackers always wins and there’s never disputing that. See you all in November !
