Having been denied seeing Digitalism when they played at Wireless this summer due to the tent being full of neon clad Klaxons fans waiting for the headline set (probably), I was looking forward to this gig quite a lot. My housemate who managed to get in left due to lack of atmosphere, which intrigued me as Idealism is a brilliant album through and through. I blamed the Klaxons fans, but I just had to find out for myself.
We arrived at Concorde later than hoped but the little that we saw of the support act showed that we probably didn’t miss a great deal. The bar area seemed almost akin to some kind of youth club what with it being an over 14’s, adding to the mix of different people there at the sold out show.
Sandwiched between curved boards with fast moving bright light projections, Digitalism dispensed track after track with exceptional delivery. From “Magnets” to “I Want, I Want”, “Idealistic” and so on; the crowd’s response merely corresponded with the momentous beats and electro finesse with endless berserk dancing. Some girl’s big hair bobbing in my face? Bit annoying but who cares this is immense!
The song the crowd went the craziest for was “Home Zone”, the random but wonderful thumping track loaded with distorted beats punctuated with the lyrics “I have the biggest body ever, at home” (I could be wrong, but I like it for this reason). The bigger guy came out to the crowd for this one and instigated the lyric change to “We have the biggest party ever in Brighton” which went down well. They may not have interacted with the crowd much throughout the gig, but this track made up for it.
The duo did leave pretty sharpish after the final song, the lights came on the sound of “One More Time” by Daft Punk, dashing any hopes of any form of encore. Although considering the fact that Idealism is their stunner of a debut; no more was required from them. I defy anyone to say that the night failed to showcase this album. Even if they didn’t talk much to the crowd, I don’t think the crowd would need to endlessly be reminded that this is Brighton yeah! To be honest I think the more jibber jabber inserted between tracks would have spoilt it. The music was constant and not only that, it was quality. And sure it wasn’t in some big superclub with more glitter balls and lasers than anyone can shake a glow stick at, but who really cares? I think most people would rather go see a good band or DJ at Concorde than somewhere like Tru or some other venue with lots of sparkly things but rubbish everything else. Concorde 2 is my favourite gig venue in Brighton and one of the main reasons is that it is dedicated to live music and has so far I’ve only ever had good nights there. More importantly, Digitalism’s set was more than enough to ensure that it was one truly immense night and certainly did not disappoint.
