More Gary Numan than the Klaxons, this band of Nottingham upstarts are definitely one to keep an eye on in 2008. Armed with “The Bears Are Coming” promo psychedelic glasses, the audience of fop haired youngsters danced to the sounds of the debut unreleased album Zarcorp from Late of the Pier
Signed by Parlophone and produced by Erol Alkan, the band’s sound is described as music to have asthma to; and why not? Late of the Pier were very entertaining to watch, what with their well timed robotic dance moves, synthesisers being played like a typewriter and songs bursting with energy. With lyrics such as “Get your hands on your waistline and move your body to the bassline”, one can hardly refuse, even if it does mean trying to ignore the stench of BO in the air (teenagers…what can I say?). Despite this there was no excuse not to be moving somehow, it was dancing all the way.
Considering lead singer Earl Samuel Dust was nursing a sore throat with a honey/lemon/hot water/whiskey concoction, he still did very well in exhibiting his ever varying vocal range throughout the show and especially for Bathroom Gurgle; the final song of the night. Also among the highlights were the instrumental VW, Space and the Woods, Heartbeat and the next single The Bears Are Coming.
Late of the Pier definitely have fine tuned their live show since the last time I saw them, which was their CSS support slot at last year’s Great Escape Festival. There was more random chat and strange dance moves and they were more robust in terms of their performance. From a rather quiet but musically charming band of last year, they have progressed into something far more memorable and promising, I cannot wait for the album to be released.
