It is still 1985 @ New Hero

1985 was a year of many firsts for me. I was born 61 days before it started so I can’t remember any of them. I imagine it was the year which included taking my first steps, my first words and my first birthday. I know the last one happened anyway.

Now when I hear 1985 it means something entirely different. It is still 1985 took it’s first steps last May on a Thursday night to test the water. Then the students went for the summer but it got going again in October in New Hero and demand moved it to Saturdays a few weeks ago. The idea seems to be to have an 80s night that is “like going to that night club in Scarface, like living inside GTA Vice City, like the video montage from Rocky IV, like a series of fist clenching power ballads colliding head on with The Ghostbusters moonwalking on Phil Collin’s face whilst wearing Adam Ant make up.”

I’ve become quite a fan of the night. I’ve been there week in week out since it moved to Saturdays. There’s something I can’t quite put my finger on that I’m a fan of. I love the 80s classic movies (The Breakfast Club, Back to the Future, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) that are put on big screens. Sometimes Henron, promoter/DJ of 1985 and Somewhere in the Universe even puts music videos on the big screens and everyone goes mad for their favourite Bruce or MJ clips. There’s even been a slow set to make people think they’re at a high school prom! But all of that would be useless if the crowd there was a let down. I can say with some confidence that the crowd is always amazing. Everyone is just having fun and even the hipsters smile every few minutes.

It is still 1985 is on every Saturday. This week there’s a Daft Punk Christmas Party in the other room at New Hero that will host a DJ set from Parisian Police. So this week for £3 you get into both.

New Years eve will see both Somewhere in the Universe and It is still 1985 take over New Hero for what will surely be an awesome night of fun from 10pm til breakfast…
A limited number of advance tickets are ON SALE NOW at £12 each and are available from Rounder, Resident, Ape Shop, Lick Ice Cream and New Hero itself. Pick them up now to guarantee entry because it’ll be jammed.
