Felix Da Housecat @ Coalition

I used to rave about Felix Da Housecat… back when electro, was more electro-clash than electro breaks, house, or whatever genre is attached to it now. Electro-clash was a genre within itself, able to stand alone. Spearheaded by the likes of Felix, Miss Kittin, Vitalic, Fischerspooner, Peaches, Tiga, Adult, Black Strobe, Chicks on Speed etc… it was something cutting edge at the time. Of course like many things, the recent minimal craze, new rave and those stupid kids who dress like goths, it moved on.

If you say the words electro these days the connotations are mangled with the shite you see on those free-view music channels. But in my heart electro only has 2 real homes. The 1980’s electro sound, from the pop styling’s of Kraftwerk and Herbie Hancock to the hip hop break-dance beats of Davy DMX, the Break Machine and many others. This decade saw the introduction of the newest incarnation of Electro, which became known as Electro-clash. The music often featured prominent vocals, with lyrics taking centre stage in the productions. Classic’s such a Frank Sinatra, featuring the sultry vocal’s of Miss Kittin:

to be famous is so nice, suck my dick, kiss my ass, in limousines we have sex, every night with my famous friends

Still standout as classics with almost cult status. Felix was the creative force of tracks which would in a way define a genre. Felix’s most famous record probably being the fantastic Silver Screen:

Sweet seduction in a magazine, endless pleasure in a limousine, in the back shakes a tambourine, Nicotine from a silver screen

Once again featuring the vocal styling’s of Miss Kittin. While the genres popularity did die out, and some artists involved, such as Miss Kittin did go on to produce some terrible albums. The classic records of electro-clash live on.
