Okay, I’ll admit it: when I first got an inkling about Beachdown going kapput on Tuesday night I wasn’t at all gutted. Call me a scrooge, but I didn’t fancy forking out to go rough it on the Downs just so I could spend two or three days watching my friends get munted in the same way they do every weekend.

So…Beachdown. If you haven’t heard already, Brighton’s fledgling festival was cancelled by its organisers late last night. Reasons cited include slower than forecast ticket sales, lack of support from their bank and suppliers and, of course, what will surely go down in the history books as the most over-used phrase of 2009, the current economic climate.

It’s Sunday morning, 10.00 am and you have still not been to bed after a heavy night with Giles Peterson. You need a cuddle. You have lost your friends. Beachdown, it seems, has thought of everything….. break the world record for mass spooning!

Somewhere in the Universe was one of those nights I noticed back in 2006 and every time I saw their flier, I thought “A for effort” – it definitely looked like a different sort of night, quite underground and unknown with their Ponana venue and clearly good music policy with a lot of the electro pop contingency brandishing their names.

[ August 15, 2009; ] It’s moments like this, a beer with mates and dancing in the sunshine in front of a tranquil sea that makes us all fall so in love with Brighton and remember why we don’t sell out, take the money and live in the big smoke.

[ August 6, 2009 11:00 pm to August 7, 2009 4:00 am. ] Benny Page, a man widely know in Drum and Bass as much for his production as his DJ sets makes his first appearance at Supercharged for our first event of August, playing an exclusive Dubstep set! With recent Dubstep projects such as ‘Pan Pipes’ and ‘Trigger Finger’ are anything to go by, this is guaranteed to be a great night of music!

Got some local goodness for you all – Contraband DJ’s have secured a weekly slot on the local pirate station Up Front Dance. You can tune in every Sunday from 6pm. You can also access the live streams online or by tuning your radio to 100.6FM. The signal should be available in and around the Brighton area.

[ August 28, 2009 to August 31, 2009. ] It’s time to start buying festival tickets again and this year we are spoilt for choice. The early bird ticket offers are flying out with even large established festivals such as Sonar extending their lower rate pass sales by one month.
