Depending on whom you ask, Matthew Dear is a DJ, a dance-music producer, an experimental pop artist, a bandleader. He co-founded both Ghostly International and its dancefloor offshoot, Spectral Sound. He’s had remixes commissioned by The XX, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Spoon, Hot Chip, The Postal Service, and Chemical Brothers; he’s made mixes for the Fabric mix series and Get Physical’s Body Language. He maintains four aliases (Audion, False, Jabberjaw, and Matthew Dear), each with its own style and distinct visual identity. He straddles multiple musical worlds and belongs to none—and he’s just hitting his stride.

Matthew Dear’s 2003 full-length Ghostly debut, Leave Luck to Heaven, is a suite of sparse, wickedly funky house laced with Dear’s deep, distinctive vocals, and includes the much-loved single “Dog Days” (voted one of Pitchfork’s Top 100 Songs of the Decade). The record was met with rapturous acclaim from both the dance-music establishment and the critical press, including a four-star review in Rolling Stone. Dear’s 2007 follow-up.

Asa Breed, is a considerable departure from Heaven’s dancefloor excursions, incorporating the polyrhythms of Afrobeat, the irreverent pop sensibilities of Brian Eno, and the austere beauty of Krautrock. More four-stars reviews followed (Q and Mojo magazines), and Dear subsequently began touring with a live three-piece band, Matthew Dear’s Big Hands, in which he acted as frontman, commanding the stage with a Bryan Ferry-like swagger and a gentleman’s grace.

Today, Matthew Dear finds himself in a unique position. His highly anticipated fourth album, 2010’s Black City, is the culmination of years of hard work and experimentation, a darkly playful sound-world that envelops the listener like the arms of a malevolent lover. After over a decade of exploring pop’s outer limits, Matthew Dear now inhabits a rarefied corner of the musical universe: no longer tethered to any one genre, respected by his peers, and blessed with a bottomless well of creative energy. Now is Matthew Dear’s moment, and it sounds like nothing else.

Matthew Dear’s Black City can’t be found on any map. It’s a composite, an imaginary metropolis peopled by desperate cases, lovelorn souls, and amoral motives. Like most literary Gothams, Black City is a place to love and hate, as seedy as a nightclub’s back room and as seductive as the promise of power. Matthew Dear, the musician, may live in New York City, but the Matthew Dear of Black City inhabits a sound-world unlike any other: a monument to the shadowy side of urban life that bumps and creaks, shudders and wakes up screaming in the middle of the night. Black City is Matthew Dear’s third album on Ghostly International, and it’s his darkest and most engrossing work to date.

From the first notes of album opener “Honey”, it’s clear that the love-obsessed Matthew Dear of 2007’s Asa Breed has given way to a more existentially paranoid entity, as creeping tempos dominate, cavernous atmospherics envelop the listener, and strange distortions crackle on the horizon. In Black City, nothing is at it seems: leadoff single “Little People (Black City)” is a nine-and-a-half minute disco odyssey, subverting its gleaming electronic lead with eerily giddy backing vocals and cryptic, ominous lyrics (“a frozen wasted heart / has died”, “love me like a clown”); “You Put a Smell on Me” is a sordid sex romp set to hysterically chattering percussion and a serrated synth line that will set your teeth on edge; “More Surgery” at first recalls the barely-there Krautrock of Harmonia in its burbling minimalism, until Dear’s chanted chorus of “Alter genetics / to make my body glow / I need more surgery / there’s so much more to know” sends the track hurtling into a dystopian future.

And yet, for all the foreboding moods on Black City, it’s the album’s sweeter moments that illustrate Matthew Dear’s growing maturity as a songwriter. “Slowdance” is a futuristic lullaby in which Dear articulates a lover’s helplessness (“I can’t be the one to tell you everything’s wrong”) over breathy, Arthur Russell-esque cello swishes; the album-closing “Gem” is an achingly simple, reverb-drenched piano ballad that ends with a long, slow fade. Even in Matthew Dear’s Black City, there is hope.

Straight from the Concorde’s website:

Hold tight for possibly the biggest electronic music gig in Brighton this season, starring the mighty Laurent Garnier supported by a one off coming together of DJs from Stompa Phunk, one of the longest running and best loved parties in Brightons clubbing history . Between 1998 and 2009, Stompa Phunk delivered some of the most memorable sessions this town has ever seen every Friday for over a decade at Funky Buddha and Audio, bringing numerous legends of house and techno to town week in, week out. And out of all those who came to play, Laurent Garnier was arguably the biggest and best of all and certainly the unanimous favourite of the SP team.

Dance music royalty doesnt come much higher than Laurent Garnier, and we are honoured to announce this exclusive Brighton gig with his current Live Booth Sessions project. Working live with collaborators Scan X (a techno legend in his own right) and newcomer Benjamin Rippert Rocco, the trio rework Laurents original tracks in real time, incorporating fully improvised jams with Laurents peerless DJing. Already a highlight of festivals the world over, it goes without saying that this rare UK gig is absolutely not to be missed.

From early days hanging out at the Hacienda to his current role as worldwide ambassador for house techno, electronica and club music in pretty much all its forms, Laurent Garnier has earned a reputation as one of the finest dance musicians and DJs of all time. Famed for his 6,8, even 12 hour sets, he spins everything from the freshest undergound house to classic techno, soul, and even drum n bass, while his extraordinary productions (including classics such as Acid Eiffel) have earned him the respect of not only the staunch underground but the wider club world, too.

More recently, hes been touring in support of his epic Tales of a Kleptomaniac album, and his latest project, the Live Booth Sessions, sees him join forces with Scan X and Benjamin Rippert Rocco for a next level DJ-live-jam show of typically astounding proportions.

Stompa Phunks veteran residents and regulars count among their number some of the most respected names in electronic music today, including Radio Slave, Serge Santiago, Evil Nine, Kenny Hawkes, David Parr, Tula and more lesser known but equally devoted house and techno fanatics. The full line-up is being kept under wraps for now but be assured that a crack squad of SP faves old and new are primed and ready to hit Brighton once again..

Dance music is prone to hyperbole, but you’d be hard-pressed to come up with anything but words like “legend,” “titan” and “giant” when describing Carl Craig’s impact on the electronic scene. Producer, remixer, label boss, DJ, the list goes on and on.

Emerging at the end of the 1980s as the leading light of Detroit’s ’second wave’ of techno artists, Carl Craig has been relentlessly inventive, prolific and inspirational for over 20 years. His production work (as BFC, Psyche, Paperclip People and more) stands among the best electronic music ever made, while his esteemed label Planet E is without doubt one of electronic music’s most treasured and important imprints.

He’s been nominated for a Grammy, performed his music with a symphony orchestra and traveled the world evangelizing for forward-thinking house and techno from Detroit and beyond – and that doesn’t even begin to scratch the surface.

It goes without saying that this very special intimate show is a unique opportunity to catch the man himself spinning the music that made him who he is today.

New Brighton night Beat Redemption has sure got me excited about their next event in March. The inaugural one at the back end of January was a stonking success with a packed out crowd shovelling the deepest depths of bass marshalled by Hyperdub’s Kode9 and Cooly G. Concorde’s system pounded like I haven’t heard it in a while.

The next one on 12th March will be headlined by Los Angeles’ beat maestro, retro computer game enthusiast, jazz legend nephew and premiere orgasm inducer to radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbes. Oh, he also has a big hand in LA record label Brainfeeder (Ras G, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, TOKiMONSTA). Flying Lotus has a new album out in May, which said radio 1 dj is getting her knickers very twisted over. He’s been confirmed for Bestival and before that he’ll be a Butlin’s weekender BLOC. All in all, his shit is red hot!

If that wasn’t enough the promoters have also crammed a couple of other quite capable headliners on to the bill. Dutch dub man Martyn (author of recent fabric50) will be doing a 90-minute set. Then there’s a live performance from King Midas Sound which is musical alter-ego of The Bug (skeng!). All that and a load of other stuff including Greena from Bristol’s Apple Pips playing in the front room. Check here for all the details.

See you in the dub-pit.

Parisian synth magician Debruit makes hip hop music, but not like you’ve ever heard it before. Forging a sturdy alliance between tropical synth lines, bottom-heavy crunk and classic hip hop beats, he has been destroying dance floors across the planet for the last 12 months. A graduate of the infamous Red Bull Music Academy he has three solid EPs under his belt, two released on his own Musique Large label, run alongside fellow Frenchmen Fulgeance, with one on Reso’s Civil Music and another due to drop this month. He has a plethora of amazing mixes floating around on the internet, including a set for Mary Anne Hobbs, but we advise you check his live set for Sonar Festival from last year, it’ll blow you clean away.

Boss Kite, aka local Brighton chap Ross Flight, is a victim of Skweee. Like the rest of the Donky Pitch family Ross fell in love with this Scandinavian phenomena on first listen and in the 9 months since he has been knee deep in synths and computer programs forging his own melodic take on this ’synthetic funk.’ “I started making Skweee music because I really wanted to be part of something I thought was exciting, fresh and completely unlike most electronic music that was coming out of the UK at the time. The simplicity of the sounds really grabbed me and I found a strange sort of personality in the music that was different in every Skweee track I heard.” The results of his labour have gained him recognition from the rest of the burgeoning Skweee community around the world, and we’re really pleased he’s chosen to share it with us first.

Feeling dirt poor, broken and a bit SAD?

There’s always at least one night that comes along in January, just when you thought ‘I’m not going out for at least another two pay cheques’ and ‘I really should rest up/drink less/stop blacking out’ and by the end of the month all of resolutions you made on the 1st seem stupid and pointless. It’s time to go out.

On 23 January, BLACKBOX have pulled together a night of dirty bass music that won’t break the bank – 3 quid before midnight down at the Concorde 2.

DJing on the night is the legendary Phil Hartnoll (Orbital), who’s apparently taken a break from gigging since the band re-formed last year.

In Room 1, there’s Coin operated Records founder Mustard Gunn playing bass heavy wonky techno, Sicknote resident, techno anarachist Sketchy Steve, and BlackBox residents Tony Montana and Jiminy Clackett.

In Room 2, it’s all about the psy-trance, hosted by Wonkay Music, with DJs Hugoblin, Dez, Hugo Nation, DMT, and Kayaman.

They say:

Complete club transformation
Lazer and Light show
Massive soundsystem
Cheap Drinks deals all night

Saturday 23 January 2010, 11pm – 4am Concorde 2, Madeira Drive, Brighton

£3 Advance tickets – only available online at www.concorde2.co.uk

[ January 11, 2010 10:00 pm to January 12, 2010 2:00 am. ] A new year and a new night to hit our shores - Aka Aka Roar. They really seem to have hit the nail on the head with their concept: "Brighton has its fair share of dubstep nights, but AKA AKA ROAR is distinct, not only in the artists it welcomes on to the bill, but in its unrelenting attempts to provide a quality night of progressive music at a cheap price."

A new year and a new night to hit our shores – Aka Aka Roar. They really seem to have hit the nail on the head with their concept:

Amid the rapid commercialisation of dubstep, we are looking towards those artists who are developing the sound and its related sub-genres. With dubstep being heavily influenced by 2step we feel it’s important to look back as well as forwards and dig out those artists and sounds that made the genre what it is today. Brighton has its fair share of dubstep nights, but AKA AKA ROAR is distinct, not only in the artists it welcomes on to the bill, but in its unrelenting attempts to provide a quality night of progressive music at a cheap price. More than being “just another dubstep night”, we look to the broader genre for inspiration. Dubstep has moved on and whether you call it ‘funkstep’, ‘future garage’, ‘Progressive dub’ or even ‘techno’ we love it and we think you will too!

It all kick’s off with the fantastic Appleblim on the 11th of January at Life.

For now here’s a Aka Aka Roar promo mix, from Ben White, to keep you satisfied over the weekend: http://www.mediafire.com/?2ddzqdwmywd.

With Kachings reminisent to the beginning of Pink Floyd’s 1973 hit Money, it’s time for another new years even in Brighton. This list is a work in progress and will be updated with any changes up till new years day.

Our backings with Life, Supercharged and the Slackers Convention.

£32 to go to Digital?? Two words… blow me.

Happy New Year

The choice’s for this year are…

Venue: Audio

Featuring: 1920’s Secret Speakeasy – Support from Minimal Kids, Riva Star, Cagedbaby

Sold As: Our NYE parties are the stuff of Brighton legend, and this year we’re going all out with a celebration of the most decadent and debauched of all decades – the 1920s. With THREE separate arenas decked out in full ’20s style, and of course a killer line-up, it promises to be the biggest and best Audio NYE yet.

Above Audio // Step back in time to a roaring 1920’s speakeasy bar at Above Audio this NYE, replete with all the glamour and excess that the decade was famed for. The venue will be completely transformed with full 20’s decor, including decadent private booths, luxury full length drapes, and the legendary Above Audio cocktail bar in full effect. Hosting the speakeasy’s turntables, we’re honoured to welcome veteran Audio DJ Mex (Black Grass), who’ll be spinning his peerless selection of deep soul, hip-hop, disco and quality party anthems.

Terrace // Heading outside, our terrace hosts a very special 1920’s Cigar & Liqour Bar, where a full live jazz band will be on hand to entertain guests while they sample premium spirits and enjoy fine cigars at our walk-in art deco humidor. Whatever the weather, our fully-heated marquee ensures that the Above Audio Liqour & Cigar Bar will be the classiest smoking area in town this NYE.

Audio // As you’d expect, we’ve put together a killer line-up for the downstairs club. Local hero Cagedbaby takes a break from touring, remixing and producing Fatboy Slim (among many others) to drop one of his killer electro-disco-house sets. He’s joined by Riva Starr, one of the most talked-about talents in house right now, whose releases for Jesse Rose’s Frontroom label and Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried have catapulted him to club stardom. Support comes from Enzo Siffredi, whose cutting edge tech-house and signature minimal has made Audio clubnight Minimal Kids one of the biggest new parties of the year. Accompanying the sounds, we’ve commissioned some unique old-school video footage, including live real-time manipulation of video shot at the party itself.

Just before I was going to do a shameless plug for my gritty short story night at Red Roaster (which is on tonight!), it did occur to me that I happened to pick a pretty spectacular night for my event.

Not only were there two other literary events happening (Space, Hammer & Tongue), but more importantly, Goldie, Major Lazer Soundsystem and Herbaliser were all in Brighton TONIGHT.

Plus there’s a new techno/psy-trance night called Sicknote down at the Volks, which I was planning to make my final destination after getting drunk at St James.

Being a fair person, I decided to feature all of them, instead of my own night. I’ll let you make up your own mind regarding music tastes, but whatever you do, don’t stay in.

If you were a kid in the ’80s or a true short story lover, come down to Kemptown’s Red Roaster for Grit Lit, featuring Isabel Ashdown, Jake Kennedy, Emma Gray, Tim Lay, Chris Callard, Ed Siegle, and me.

We’ve got gangsters, black artists, Brazillian favelas, drugs, raves, alcoholic mums, pretty much the whole gritty deck. It’s a fiver to get in, licensed bar, nice people and we kick out at 10pm (doors 7.45pm). Facebook holds all the answers.

Music fiends

Major Lazer Soundsystem, Mumdance, Blah Blah Blah DJs – Digital

Sicknote: D.A.V.E. the Drummer, Julian Liberator, Antispin, 11pm £5/4 – Volks

Herbaliser, Tinroots, 7.30pm – Concorde 2

Culture vultures

Studio Hammer & Tongue 2009 Grand Slam Final Performance poetry, 7.30pm £5 – Komedia

The Space: Goldie, Ian Rankin, 8pm, £6/4 – Latest Music Bar

Wayne McGregor/Random Dance: Entity Dance and multimedia performance with a soundtrack from Jon Hopkins and Joby Talbot, 8pm £17.50/15/10 – Corn Exchange
