When did you start Fat!Beaches and what was your inspiration? How did it all come about?

We formed Fat!Beaches here in Brighton back in 2006. From the very beginning it was me aka Subtone and Arkadiusz Koper, who started it. The whole idea behind it, was to fulfill the lack of quality club nights playing underground music, the very same we have been listening to while going out back in Poland. Since then (over two years now) we’ve thrown about 30 parties in different venues across Brighton and we’ve played in clubs in London such as Aquarium, The Egg and Gramophone – which has always been good fun!

How did you both meet?

We met on the dancefloor at the Eskulap Club in Poznan in Poland, actually I can remember this quite well, it was Phonique from BPitch Control headlining that night… This club inspired us a lot, you know there were frequent nights of labels such as Tresor or Gigolo records, so we were listening to a lot of big European House/Techno/Electro djs. It probably had a massive impact on us and the venue is still there, despite poor opportunities to party that way here in Brighton.

How would you best describe the music policy?

Our style was changing and developing over the past few years, but for now I could easily say that we are definitely into Minimal House and Techno which is mostly becoming more about Tech – House these days. We have been trying to push these great vibes over here as we are simply passionate about this sounds. I’m more eclectic. In my mind old school genres like Detroit Techno or pumping House music blends together with nowadays upfront House/Techno/Electronica. Arkadiusz, he is more into new Minimal – Tech – House as well as more scientific about technology, using lots of fx in his mixes. I’m more classical, I like long smooth mixes but with elegance and soul added to it.

You have recently moved the night away from the underground at Tom’s bar. What was the reason for this move?

Basically, we weren’t happy about the way they treated us there. Despite our last party being successful, we ended up finishing before we were supposed to as there were people from Brighton Council metering the sound levels. Many people left during our guest DJ set slot as we had to put the music down for about 15 minutes, not a good experience. In addition to that we didn’t get any support or understanding from the management of the venue, on the contrary we got kicked out. In fact we kicked ourselves out. It was just too much. We are happy to give up the space for other promoters.

What would be your ideal venue in Brighton?

There is a few, really nice, interesting venues around, but in reality, during almost four years I have been living in Brighton, not much changed. Big clubs even though they are great party spaces, they will always be for commercial sound/people only, with no exception. In this case sound of quality House and Techno in Brighton will probably always stay underground, finding its place in little dungeons and old basements, despite its huge popularity in the rest of the Europe. But answering the question. We didn’t find the ideal place here yet, but there is still a few left to try. I believe Micro would be a good place to try in the nearest future:)

What have you go lined up for the future?

For the summer time we are going to join our friends nights as guest DJ’s. For the time being, we are booked to play on the nights such as: B-Side, Upside Down and Gonzo Disco. We are also trying to collaborate with nights like Analogue and Beep Low Tech. There is no pressure for us, we just want to play music and people to dance to it. We also got into production a bit already and we are definitely going to bring some buzz around and release more quality mixes and our own productions in the nearest future.

words by Subtone

30-year-old French artist and designer Anna Chocola (Anna Orliac) has put together a lovely little France-meets-Brighton mix of all her current favorite tunes. The mix starts off nicely with acid house influenced “White Night Two”, from Institubes babe Surkin, off his “Next of Kin” EP which came out exactly one year ago. It also includs firm electro classics, such as Daft Punk and Booka Shade, as well as new-to-my-ear D*L*I*D (dicklaurentisdead).

Anna currently works for Milliner Jill Corbett, creating original appliqué-embroideries on leather and tweed hats, but produces unique items for sale (on her site) and accepts commissions. Originally hailing from Agen, in the south west of France, Anna now lives in our cozy, seaside haven of Brighton, spending a lot of time on her sewing machine at home, creating quirky clothing, bags, hats, home furnishings and toys. She also working artistically in the visual art medium, producing embroideries, paintings, drawings.

Check out her zany world of wonky animals and on her deliciously handcrafted site and ebay shop, but in the meantime, enjoy the “mix” – and see below for an actual gooey chocolate desert recipe!

birthday chocolate pudding recipe

Serves 6.

ingredients
• 455g best-quality cooking chocolate (70% cocoa solids)
• 50ml hot espresso or good strong instant coffee
• 125g butter, plus extra for greasing
• 6 eggs, free-range or organic, separated
• 200g caster sugar
• 100g ground almonds
• 100g rice flour
• 1 small handful chopped hazelnuts, toasted

Melt 125g chocolate with the coffee, then pour into small ice-cube moulds and freeze until hard. Take 6 small 3 inch pastry rings, dariole moulds or cappuccino cups and grease well with some butter. Place in the fridge while you make your sponge mixture.

Melt the remaining chocolate with the butter in a bowl over a pan of boiling water, then in a separate bowl whisk the egg whites with the sugar until firm. Fold the yolks into the cooled chocolate and butter mixture, then add the almonds and flour. Finish by carefully folding in the egg white mixture.

Preheat the oven to 190ºC/375ºF/gas 5. Take your moulds out of the fridge and spoon a little mixture into each one, then push in a cube of the frozen coffee and chocolate mixture. Cover with the rest of the sponge mixture so each ice cube is completely enveloped.

Bake in the preheated oven for about 18–20 minutes, then remove carefully from the moulds while hot. Serve immediately sprinkled with hazelnuts.

You’ve probably passed that tiny turquoise blue Japanese novelty shop called Nasty Nip on North Road and wondered “how do they stay open?” What surprises most people to learn is that the shop has been there for the past six years, owned by the sweet and charming 30-something Yota and his two Shiba-Inu dogs Mango and Tesco.

Yota originaly hails from Kyoto, but has spent the past 20-odd years living in London and throughout Europe, first making his living as a model scout and DJ. He came to Brighton to take a break from his hectic London lifestyle and made just-off North Laine his home.

“Is that the Nasty Nip dog?” by ma@san, found on the Bansky Forum

Although his DJing days are long gone, Yota still has impeccable taste in music. He’s always got something good on the go in his shop as he works away on his laptop.

Here’s a mix that Yota put together for us. It’s got that real winter warmer feel to it from the start, with a jazzy rendition of “White Lines (Don’t Do It)”.

The mix features classics like Soft Cells’s “Where Did Our Love Go?” but also adds healthy dollops of feel-good tracks (Harvey Danger’s “Flagpole Sitta”) and pure unadulterated cheese (Soul Source remix of Boys Town Gang’s “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You”).

I love this mix; even though I predominantly listen to dance music, it’s nice to take a break and switch tracks for a while. My money’s down that females will dig this more than guys. Don’t ask me why – just a guess!

With the popularity of Dubstep at the moment, they are looking at taking the setup on the road with a number of vocalists and musicians. Total sonic manipulation is now possible.]

From the Land of OBEs, Squires & Lords: JFB Is Knighted the DMC UK DJ Champion

On Friday 29th June 2007, a guy I know headed up to London with a bag full of records and came back a UK champ. JFB, Brighton DJ and producer, performed in the final DMC UK Championship heat for six minutes, wowed the packed out Empire in Shepherd’’s Bush and more importantly impressed the judges, who included DJ Daredevil, Mr Thing, Cutmaster Swift, Netik, Billy Biznizz, and Matman.

The DMC heats traveled up and down the wet countryside all summer. JFB pushed through in the Bournemouth heat in early June. As the UK champ, JFB will go on to compete against the world’’s best DJs and turntablists from Mexico, Australia, China, Norway, America and heaps of other countries for the DMC World Championship crown on Saturday 6th October and Sunday 7th October 2007 at Indig02 in London. JFB, with his sick beatjuggling and scratching abilities, will no doubt rise above the competitors. In Brighton, you can catch JFB DJing every Saturday night at a trendier-than-thou bar called Riki Tiks in the North Laine, or if you”re a mate, you can just go hang out in his studio and check out his latest tracks.

I ran into JFB about three weeks after he won the DMC UK Championship. He was flyering outside of Audio, a nightclub near the Brighton seafront, for his monthly night Battle Jam, which he runs with his good friend and collaborator, beatboxer Beardyman (also a UK champ). Inside Audio, DJ Zinc was deep into his two-hour pipe-banging drum n bass set. The walls were glistening.

“You going inside?” I asked JFB. He shook his head and looked to the ground.

“Nu-uh. It’’s gonna be full of sweaty guys and they”re all gonna be like, ”JFB, have you heard this track?” Fuck that.”

We decided to join forces and look for a party. JFB wanted to find girls – “yeah, lots of pretty girls.”

As we walked, I advised JFB he needed to hang out with more girls, which was my logic for hanging out with lots of guys – so I could meet cute boys. “Yeah,” he said, “I get what you”re saying.”

We couldn”t find any parties so we went back to JFB’’s place, where rolling papers were pulled out and new tracks were slapped on. I drank the dregs of two wine bottles. I asked JFB about winning the championship. “Oh, it’’s alright,” he said with a modest shrug. “No big deal.” It was about 6am when we all finally went home.

Having known JFB for years, meeting him through Nottingham drum n bass DJ V-Chip, and worked with him on several projects, it’’s hard to write about a technically awesome DJ who also happens to be the most modest artist I”ve ever come across. Despite being a previous UK championship winner (Movement/Vestax 2003 DJ Competition), you will see JFB pounding the streets for hours, passing out flyers for his own nights and talking to passing groups of people. As a producer, he has worked with many musical legends such as Evil 9, I”lls, Tc Islam, Brockie, Deekline, McDet, and Skool of Thought, and yet if you were to complement a set, he”d tell you to shut up. JFB’’s richer and more interesting collaborations, however, are the ones with his two close friends here in Brighton, Beardyman and drum n bass dj/producer Ed Solo. Quite a few tracks from the boys feature on JFB’’s latest drum n bass mix, which is literally hot off the press.

It’s the month of Love and here at Brighton Fusion we’re offering a loved up selection of grooves from Brighton DJ, D-No. Knowing that Fusion is often typecast into the techno/ minimal/ breaks category we”re trying to bring you more genres from Brighton’’s artists. Check out our range of pod-casts and have a great month.

D-No’’s passion for music and DJ’ing began in around 94 when he started frequenting clubs such as Golden & Kinetic in Stoke on Trent. After hanging out in the main rooms for a while he was soon drawn to the more mellow sounds being played elsewhere. From that point onwards House music of all kinds has been his main musical focus.

Since moving to Brighton over the last few years D-No has played at various venues including resindencies at The Cosmo Bar & The Setting Sun, Above Audio, The Tzar Bar (now the Honey Bar) also The Lo Lounge.

The Balearic/sunshine thing comes into D-No’’s sets whenever possible, as well as this he likes to venture into the deeper soulful/underground side of things if that’’s what suits the mood. It’’s important to play tracks people know and can relate to as well as all the latest promos! The future includes continuing to play out and about around Brighton, further Margot’’s Theme Parties, a venture into the production side of things and who knows what else!

He’’s recently warmed up for Gucci Soundsystem, Skint Records” bi-monthly showcase, and more, and his rocking blend of house, electro and beyond make him a definite name to watch in the coming months.
