New Brighton night Beat Redemption has sure got me excited about their next event in March. The inaugural one at the back end of January was a stonking success with a packed out crowd shovelling the deepest depths of bass marshalled by Hyperdub’s Kode9 and Cooly G. Concorde’s system pounded like I haven’t heard it in a while.

The next one on 12th March will be headlined by Los Angeles’ beat maestro, retro computer game enthusiast, jazz legend nephew and premiere orgasm inducer to radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbes. Oh, he also has a big hand in LA record label Brainfeeder (Ras G, Gaslamp Killer, Nosaj Thing, TOKiMONSTA). Flying Lotus has a new album out in May, which said radio 1 dj is getting her knickers very twisted over. He’s been confirmed for Bestival and before that he’ll be a Butlin’s weekender BLOC. All in all, his shit is red hot!

If that wasn’t enough the promoters have also crammed a couple of other quite capable headliners on to the bill. Dutch dub man Martyn (author of recent fabric50) will be doing a 90-minute set. Then there’s a live performance from King Midas Sound which is musical alter-ego of The Bug (skeng!). All that and a load of other stuff including Greena from Bristol’s Apple Pips playing in the front room. Check here for all the details.

See you in the dub-pit.

For bio’s read below.

And if you love/like/are curious/don’t-know-what-the-hell-it-is-but-think-it-sounds-funny Donky Pitch will also be holding a screening of the film “We Call It Skwee”. Its at The Globe pub on Tues 2nd Feb from 8pm with Donky Pitch DJs playing their favourite ‘Skwee’ tunes subsequently.

Parisian synth magician Debruit makes hip hop music, but not like you’ve ever heard it before. Forging a sturdy alliance between tropical synth lines, bottom-heavy crunk and classic hip hop beats, he has been destroying dance floors across the planet for the last 12 months. A graduate of the infamous Red Bull Music Academy he has three solid EPs under his belt, two released on his own Musique Large label, run alongside fellow Frenchmen Fulgeance, with one on Reso’s Civil Music and another due to drop this month. He has a plethora of amazing mixes floating around on the internet, including a set for Mary Anne Hobbs, but we advise you check his live set for Sonar Festival from last year, it’ll blow you clean away.

Boss Kite, aka local Brighton chap Ross Flight, is a victim of Skweee. Like the rest of the Donky Pitch family Ross fell in love with this Scandinavian phenomena on first listen and in the 9 months since he has been knee deep in synths and computer programs forging his own melodic take on this ’synthetic funk.’ “I started making Skweee music because I really wanted to be part of something I thought was exciting, fresh and completely unlike most electronic music that was coming out of the UK at the time. The simplicity of the sounds really grabbed me and I found a strange sort of personality in the music that was different in every Skweee track I heard.” The results of his labour have gained him recognition from the rest of the burgeoning Skweee community around the world, and we’re really pleased he’s chosen to share it with us first.

Eventually found the Jazz Place after initially going down the wrong street (does anyone else still have trouble navigating the south lanes?) all the while getting heavily rained on. It’d been a while since that last time I’d been down in the Jazz Place and it was good to be there again as I’ve some fond memories of that cosy basement. Blue Daisy took the controls as first live act of the evening and was warming into his set when I arrived. Playing what I suspect were mostly his own cuts, Blue Daisy played a set with a lot more groove than I had been expecting, mixing some very deep and atmospheric sounds with precision assaults of crushing beats. It put me in mind of one of my favourite Warp artists, Clark. Especially the crushing mile-wide repetitive beats of what I think I recognised as his own ‘Hunterz’. On tonight’s evidence I got the distinct impression Blue Daisy will among the most interesting artists in electronic music over the next few years both live and producing beats.

TOKiMONSTA came straight after Blue Daisy’s seamless groove with 45 mins that veered between cosmic hip-hop and some good old-fashioned rave inspired anthemic moments. Chief among the latter and getting a great reaction from the crowd were her own cuts using samples of of Lee “Scratch” Perry’s ‘I Chase the Devil’ and The Loonies ‘I Got Five on It’. It all got very muddled up during TOKi’s set as her concoction of gnarling sub-bass and shimmering scatter-gun beats combined to addle my mind. The only thing I clearly remember is not being able to leave the dancefloor. And there I pretty much stayed until the end of the following set of Slugabed.

Big ups to Donky Pitch for putting on a night of such unique quality. One of the organisers told me they are simply interested in playing music and putting on artists that they really want to hear, and hopefully this will be what a number of others will want to hear also. The crowd was a good mix of those who wanted to have a bit of a party and those more content to head nod, but it was clear the vast majority were drawn there for the music. With a music policy at the intersection between British dubstep, west coast hip-hop and Scandinavian skwee, a place where a great deal of innovative and exciting artists are creating some amazing music, Donky Pitch is well placed to showcase it in Brighton for our distinct pleasure.

Donky Pitch DJs have a residency every 3rd Saturday at The Globe. 9pm-1am

The first Donky Pitch night was only held back in June this year but is already proving to be a heavyweight addition to the underground music scene in Brighton, playing cutting edge experimental hip-hop and electronica, without the added pretentiousness but with a lot of fun(k). Next Thursday sees them put on two live performances by some rising stars of electronica from opposite sides of the Atlantic. TOKiMONSTA based in L.A. and part of the Brainfeeder label family which includes Flying Lotus and Gaslamp Killer is playing as part of her first UK tour. Expect some soulful hip-hop sounds set against some real dirty floor shaking bass. Blue Daisy from Camden is someone a lot of people are very excited about. A live set that should leave the crowds guts shaken and minds enriched. In his own words:

“Imagine yourself in a box, a normal four-by-four box, and you’re sitting in there, and you’ve got little holes to breathe….and different atmospheres are coming in- you’ve got the cold air coming in, the hot air coming in, and it overwhelms you. You pass out and wake up again in the same box, but that box becomes a new world. So now, where you’re sitting, it’s not a box anymore, the box becomes what you want it to be- it becomes your world. And that’s what I try to do with my music; you’re listening to my music but I don’t want you to just listen to it, I want it to grab you and sit you in the middle of the track.”

Resident DJs Slugabed and Ghost Mutt will also be playing some wonky, funky, bass-y goodness. Not many better reasons to start your weekend early, not that most of Brighton need much encouragement to do that.

Donky Pitch 1.2 is at The Jazz Place Thu 26/11/09

Guys, great news: my all time fave NYC breakcore DJ – Drop the Lime - is playing FOR THE SECOND TIME this year here in Brighton. I’m breathlessly excited.

DTL will be playing at Brighton dubstep night Squareroots along with Jamie Vex’d, Spyro and MCs, Angry Dance Party and Eric Multiplex on Friday 24th October at Audio.

DTL aka Luca Venezia is on the Trouble and Bass label, sometimes produces under the name Curses! and as well dropping bass-heavy dub, acid house, breakcore and whatever he fancies, during his sets, he often sings on the mic (well, it’s more like screaming than singing) and he plays TO and WITH the audience, which is a great interaction.

I first saw him perform last summer at Supersonic Festival in Birmingham and I was totally charmed. Quality stuff.

DTL’s got a few more UK gig dates if you miss Square Roots – see bottom.

And if you’re not a fan yet, check out our American cousin site Trash Menagerie, which is totally tight with Luca and features some of his mp3s and mixes for d/l – eg his mix for Fabric.

Plus they have loads of other tracks like: What I need (SharkSlayer remix) Get stuck in!

No one I know has definite plans for New Year’s Eve. Everyone I ask answers in the same sort of vague “we’ll see” sort of fashion. I’m not sure why that is, but I can take a few wild guesses. Is it people playing it the proverbial Brighton ‘cool’ or are people just not all that fussed?

This autumn, despite the opening of the too-cool-for-school Digital, has seen a less than stellar turn out in the clubs. Smoking ban has been a bit of a downer for those partial to the legal puff. Money’s tight this year – more so than other years, with redundancies in the air, interest rates on the rocks and the housing market poised on a hypothetical popping point. And then, to cap it off, there has been unannounced IDing, catching many clubbers unaware. I mean, who takes a form of identification out in this day and age? I’d expect to be carded if I was going to the Honeyclub, but not C2 or Riki Tiks!

So maybe you’re in the same boat: you’re skint, but you and your friends want to paint a red streak down Madeira Drive by whatever means necessary. Clubs or house parties? Brighton or London? One set of friends have already bought tickets for Audio, while another set of friends want to skip through the line up of free house parties. What’s a girl (or guy) to do? Keep your options open, or failing that, know what your options are.

Here are the 9 top most interesting NYE options, from your major club to the next-door pub, ranked according by price. Some are sweet FA, while are some a little bit dearer.

If you’re a night owl and plan on hunting an after-party, check out the Fusion after-party page, which we’ll be updating closer to the time.

Have a fun and safe night and keep your ears peeled for the bass!

1 * THE ELECTRIC PLAYBOYS: THE BAD 4 U NEW YEARS FREE PARTY

The bad boys of party tunes are hosting a double-jointed NYE extravaganza: occupying both the Pressure Point bar (downstairs) and Hectors House, with their music-loving DJs having strict orders to “bring it on!”. It’s also your chance to fulfill that life-long fantasy of dressing up as Princess Leah or the Forrest Gump, with their movie character fancy dress theme. Oh yeah – and it’s free. Whoa-ho!

Hectors House: the mighty Y-Inter Soundsystem will grace the premises (you lucky things), while DJs spin breaks, electro, banging house and funky techno. Party runs from 7pm-2am.

Pressure Point: DJs will keep you delighted with an eclectic set of reggae, dub, funk, hip hop, drum ‘n’ bass, retro electro and party tunes. So anything goes. Party runs from 7pm-5am.

HOW MUCH IS IT? Nada – both parties are free.

MUSIC POLICY: Everthing under the sun. See above.

HOW FAR AWAY IS IT? Hectors House and Pressure Point are on the club flight route. Close enough to walk home, depending on where you live.

WILL I GET MY FRIENDS IN?: Depends on how thin your friends are. Electric Playboy free parties are popular and they tend to be packed out, especially in these choice locations. Get there before midnight and find a corner. Good luck!

HOW LATE CAN WE STAY? 7pm – 5am

HOW DO I GET TICKETS?You don’t – just turn up.

WHAT THEY SAY: “Two New Years Eve parties for the price of none!”

2* LUNARCY NYE PARTY

It’s at End of the World pub on London Road, near Preston Circus – more information to follow !

3*MURDERDISCO NEW YEAR’S EVE

I’ve never been to their night so this is a bit of a wildcard, but for those of you who aren’t totally into electronic music, but don’t mind it when it’s peppered in pop music, this night might be a fun, small but personable option. The night takes place downstairs at the Hope Pub, which has resurrected its standing as a live music venue. Expect Hot Chip, Justice, The Cure, Pet Shop Boys, MJ, Klaxons, Chemical Brothers, Blondie, Motown, and more. The Guardian rate them – counts for something, I guess.

HOW MUCH IS IT? £5

MUSIC POLICY: Pop!

HOW FAR AWAY IS IT? Central. Stone’s throw from Brighton train station. The Hope, Queens Road, Brighton

WILL I GET MY FRIENDS IN? I’d say get a good group together and get stuck in. The music promises a silly but good romp.

HOW LATE CAN WE STAY? 8pm – 4am

HOW DO I GET TICKETS From the Hope Pub or email murderdisco@gmail.com to get a ticket reserved, pay on the night.

WHAT THEY SAY: “Plundering pop history until your heart hurts”

4 * FREQUENCY NEW YEARS EVE RAVE UP

The Frequency Festival party crew are teaming up with the Broadcast Loft Party to recreate the summery vibes from their local festival this past July. If you missed out on the mini-Brighton Glade, come down to this small but delectable party. They’re rigging up the “Deadfly HiFi” Sound System, which powered the Phunk Cafe and should do the job. These boys and girls will definitely keep people dancing all night, but you might need to scout around for an after party in advance – it shuts at 4am.

HOW MUCH IS IT? £9 / 8 (on facebook)

MUSIC POLICY: funk/ nu disco, rare groove, dub, house, bleeps, old skool & funky breaks

HOW FAR AWAY IS IT?: Away from the maddening crowds. Upstairs at the Hare & Hounds Pub, Preston Circus, London Road, Brighton – use the private side entrance

WILL I GET MY FRIENDS IN?: 100 lucky lucky people so depends on how many friends you have

HOW LATE CAN WE STAY? 8pm – 4am

HOW DO I GET TICKETS? See the Facebook group for more information. http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=6964552924

WHAT THEY SAY: “Come along, get drunk with us and dance all night long!”

5 * BUST THE BOX NYE SPECIAL

The original munter maniacs are taking their legendary Sunday parties to another all-nighter. I haven’t had word if they’re organising an after-party, but that should be a laugh and a half; it was last year.

HOW MUCH IS IT? £10 in advance

MUSIC POLICY: Musical anarchy.

HOW FAR AWAY IS IT? A stiff sea breeze awaits. Volks, Madeira Drive, Brighton

WILL I GET MY FRIENDS IN? Probably.

HOW LATE CAN WE STAY? 9pm – 6am

HOW DO I GET TICKETS? Contact Volks or check out Bust the Box facebook group.

WHAT THEY SAY: “Be there or be square.”

6 * BORN BAD NYE PARTY

Tried-and-tested Brighton retro music night hosts this NYE party in the downstairs of Komedia. Great venue, good music. Get the gloves, handbags and combed back hair and shake some tailfeathers.

HOW MUCH IS IT? £15 advance

MUSIC POLICY: 1950s & 1960s garage, rockabilly

HOW FAR AWAY IS IT? Deep in the heart of the North Laine. Komedia, Gardner Street, Brighton.

WILL I GET MY FRIENDS IN? Book in advance to avoid disappointment.

HOW LATE CAN WE STAY? 10pm – 5am

HOW DO I GET TICKETS? Komedia box office (01273 647100)

WHAT THEY SAY: “Exotic gyrations to red hot rockabilly”

7 * AUDIO NEW YEAR’S EVE: SCHTUMM! & ALL TIME TOP 100

I love it when Audio open both floors. They don’t normally do it unless they’re sure the punters will be packed in, which is a sure bet for events such as their annual summer birthday party – New Years Eve. So what a treat to have two floors, with upstairs hosted by SCHTUMM! and downstairs kitted out by ALL TIME TOP 100. Schtumm! have only been running for one year, unbelievable I know: I went to their first night ever, in the basement of a Middle Eastern restaurant in Kemptown last March, and I was surprisingly impressed by the DJ’s choice mix of breaks and electro house tunes. Heaven or hell? Hopefully a bit of both.

Audio: Schtumm! present Serge Santiago, Deepgroove, Sam Watts / Neal Lewis / Senor Mick

Above Audio: All Time Top 100 feat. Johnny Rocks, Eric Kleptone, James Kendall, Pete B, Dave Richards, Gogglez, Steve Chaos, Christ Almighty, Toby Amies, Nick Coin-Op

HOW MUCH IS IT? £20+bf tickets available before December 20th, £25 after.

MUSIC POLICY: Moveable feast

HOW FAR AWAY IS IT? On the seafront. Audio, 10 Marine Parade, Brighton

WILL I GET MY FRIENDS IN? Last I heard it was near to being sold out so act quick!

HOW LATE CAN WE STAY? 10pm-6am

HOW DO I GET TICKETS? Resident Records, Rounder Records, Dome box office (01273 709709), Above Audio, Ticket Web

WHAT THEY SAY: Their friends over at the Source reckon it’s “a perfect night out”

8 * RED HOT EVENTS NYE NIGHT @ CONCORDE 2 Drum n bass rules the roost this year at Concorde 2, one of Brighton’s bigger capacity venues. Local event promoter Red Hot Events sates never-ceasing taste for Brighton bass-heads. Line up includes , Chase & Status (dnb/hiphop/breaks), (dubstep), Ctrl Z (Nu Skool Breakz), Qemists & ID. Local live funk and beats promoters BeatCircus help support the night.

If the Devotion nights that run here are anything to go by, expect this to be sweaty and rammed. Oh, and bring your glow stick. You might need it to find your way through the main room.

HOW MUCH IS IT? £20 advance early bird tickets

MUSIC POLICY: Edgy. Drum n bass / breaks / dub step / hiphop. No messing.

HOW FAR AWAY IS IT? Ooh, it’s a bit of a hike but hey, that’s why God invented taxis! Concorde 2.

WILL I GET MY FRIENDS IN?If you’ve got a ticket. It’s a massive venue but if it’s sold out, it’s sold out.

HOW LATE CAN WE STAY? Mmm…pretty late.

HOW DO I GET TICKETS? Rounder Records, Resident Records, Ticket Web

WHAT THEY SAY: Drum n bass.

9 * OCEAN ROOMS NEW YEAR’S EVE

Hot Chip (dj set), Jonny Jilted, Disco Boy, Billy M, Enzo, Ben Cherrill, Vinyl Richie, Mick Mula. I think the line up says it all. A bumper crop of local favorites, but it’s electro-pop, flavour-of-the-month Hot Chip that melts in the mouth. I caught their live set during the summer, and it’s a real shame that they’re only doing a dj set. Where’s the love?

HOW MUCH IS IT? £22 advance.

MUSIC POLICY: Electronic stuff. You know the deal.

HOW FAR AWAY IS IT? Ocean Rooms, Morley Street, Brighton

WILL I GET MY FRIENDS IN? There’s 3 floors – hell yes!!

HOW LATE CAN WE STAY? 9.30pm – 4am (followed by an after party, but you might have to pay)

HOW DO I GET TICKETS? Contact Ocean Rooms (01273 699069)

WHAT THEY SAY: Hot Chip

I had stopped going to Supercharged. Or so I thought.

As a regular of the night since it started at the Funky Buddha, I became increasingly unexcited by the Breaks scene, and although Skool of Thought, Krafty Kuts & co are excellent producers, it all got a bit samey. Imagine if you ate your favourite meal every Wednesday, but you never changed the ingredients? You would soon become bored of your favourite meal. That is what happened with me and Supercharged. I just felt that over the years they could have added a few more ingredients, or at least adjusted the seasoning.

I have also become disillusioned with their other venture, Against the Grain, for releasing the Freestyler’s cheesy abomination that is their newest album, “Adventures in Freestyle”. It really is cheesy and awful. Surely Lloyd and crew must know it’s awful. I think even The Freestylers must know it is cheesy and awful. If that album is a representation of one of the world’s leading Breaks labels, then I’ll eat my cat. It is for these sad reasons that my nights at Supercharged became infrequent, and I went to more fresh and innovative nights such as Beat Circus for my Breaks fix instead.

That was until I saw DJ Zinc was playing a live freestyle set with a mix of genres, including Dubstep, Breaks and Drum and Bass. Being a massive fan of another Breaks and Drum and Bass hybrid DJ, Ed Solo, and also of the blossoming Dubstep scene, this night sounded a bit fresher and worth a visit. With Zinc’s roots being firmly in Drum and Bass, this night seemed to guarantee some serious bass-orientated music.

The night kicked off with Skool of Thought, who played the perfectly executed Breaks that is the backbone of the Supercharged sound. However, it didn’t quite do it for me — for reasons previously mentioned. I am somewhat out of love with breaks at the moment. I might just be a miserable old trout, and if I’m honest, I do have a Drum and Bass bias.

The club filled up nicely just in time for Zinc. Zinc continued with the Breaks vibe, giving the happy, well warmed-up crowd with some bass heavy breaks, as expected, which was very pleasing. He played many a crowd pleaser such as a Dubsteppy Flat Eric remix with a wobbly, wobbly really loud bassline that got everyone smiling.

Zinc is already well-renowned for his skills in production and remixes in Breaks and DnB so it was the new Dubstep part I was really interested in. However, despite the fact that Dubstep was on the agenda, it wasn’t the Dubstep I was expecting — the down-tempo, two-step, chest-aching, really grimy Dubstep — so I was a bit disappointed. If you want real body-vibrating, slow Dubstep, go to the Volks. In retrospect, I was wrong to expect this type of Dubstep as mixing it with Breaks it has to be faster. However there was a touch of grimy element that got people a bumpin’ and a grindin’.

He then played mostly Drum and Bass to loud cheers and this appeared to be what the crowd were really here for. A bit like Zinc’s album “Faster”, where it starts off slower and gets faster through the album, Zinc used this tried-and-tested formula of increasing the tempo throughout the night. There was a definite correlation between how loud the crowds’ cheers were and the faster the bpm and bassier the tune. It confirmed something that I always knew in my heart. Everybody loves a bit of Drum and Bass. Even back when Supercharged started, they would sometimes play Drum and Bass at the end of the night and it would send everyone into a wild, rabid frenzy. It’s a formula that works well at Supercharged.

Zinc played a live set which was great as I have never been a great fan of watching a DJ stare at a laptop. He was also having a little dance about behind the decks, its always great to see older DJ’s still getting high on their on supply and still really enjoying their music. I guess he was probably pleased about the new direction he is heading with his production, which might explain the absence on the night of his Jungle classic “Super, Sharp, Shooter” despite it being an eternal crowd pleaser. I guess he’s leaving those days behind him and doing something different. And good on him.

The crowd was everything you would expect a mid-week Audio crowd to be: care-free students and people who have mastered the delicate art of combining employment with hangovers and lack of sleep. They were very much the friendly, fashionable, cultured and polite crowd that epitomises the UK Breaks scene. No one looked like they were breaking their Asbos to be there, despite Zincs massive DnB following.

N.B. Interesting fact: did you know that the Breaks scene in Spain is really rough? Well, I’ve seen it and it is. It’s more like a rough DnB crowd in this country and I mean rough, proper scum. I’ve seen grown men who look like gangsters dance to Breakbeat like Mr.Motivator on crystal meth. Some people even had knives taken off them. Yep, you heard right, knives at a Breakbeat night — it’s Spanish chav music.

On the drinks front, I rode the Tuaca Alpaca though the Tuscan hills of Audio. Unfortunately my Tuscan adventure mean that I became excessively drunk and my memory becomes shrouded in mystery towards the end of the night. I couldn’t even tell you what, for example, the last songs were that Zinc played but I am sure they were great as I didn’t stop dancing all night. My alcohol intake also got me in trouble and I committed one of Britain’s cardinal sins. There’s always some twat that tries to jump a queue, and I’m ashamed to say I was that coat queue-jumping twat. So apologies to the people I offended and got sent to the back, I was just too drunk to associate a long line of people patiently waiting with an actual queue. I queued for so long I even fell asleep standing up, like a horse, which was a strange end to a night.

Overall, a great night had by all, but it won’t make me start going every Wednesday again as I feel there is a bit of magic missing, and they need to try a new formula — which is why Zinc was fantastic. My recommendation for the next Supercharged of interest would be Deekline on the 19th December as this will be heavily-influenced by some serious booty bass thrown into the standard Breaks mix.

Me and Supercharged simply fell out of love after a long and happy relationship. But I’m pleased to say we’re friends again.
