Seems like NYC’s Trouble and Bass honcho and Brooklyn boy Drop The Lime (Luca Venezia) is over these ways a lot more these days since he’s been part of Fabric’s residents lineup, which is great news for heavy bass fans.

Last caught him at Audio last October, when he played to lovers and new fans who were riding the crest of his grime and dancehall influenced beats and no-bars hold djing, plus the Night Slugs event at C2 which I unfortunately missed.

A good opportunity to catch him amongst the friendly and seriously discount Supercharged Wednesday (5/3 NUS) – the giveaways of DJ Marky tickets and mixtape smack of student pitching, but it’s a decent soundsystem and fairly inclusive environment and should promise to be a good night.

Support from Brighton grime/dub dj Unlikely. [facebook it]

Wednesday 22 July, Audio, Marine Parade, Brighton. 11pm-2.30am. 5/3pounds

Nathan Coles Biog from Elite Managment:

Resident at the prestigious superclub FABRIC in his hometown, London, Nathan enjoyed his musical journey at such seminal clubs as SPECTRUM at HEAVEN and the SUNRISE parties where the first generation of House Music entranced a whole generation. Nathan was there at the very beginning, ready to make his mark. Armed with a 10000 watt grin, and almost superhuman reserves of stamina, Nathan bumped and hustled his way into the hot, humid netherworld of the warehouse party scene, and in alliance with Mr C launched the legendary RELEASE parties. it was in 1994 however that he really cemented his lofty position in House Music’s Hall of Fame when he and Terry Francis begun the infamous WIGGLE parties, and in the process, gave birth to musical movement now known as TECH-HOUSE. WIGGLE’S far-reaching reputation was officially recognized when it was nominated for “BEST UNDERGROUND CLUB’ at the MUZIK MAGAZINE SAS awards.

In this respect Nathan can justifiably be called a musical pioneer, having spent the last 15 years as a kind of roving ambassador of Tech-House, laying down rapturously-received sets of loose-limbed, funk-fuelled House in an array of venues all over the world, such as: Space, Pacha, Bora Bora, Underground (Ibiza), D Edge and Lov E (Sao Paulo), Mint(Buenos Aires), The Milwegg, Stalker, Now Wow, Impulse, The Caves & Ofcorso (Holland), The Zouk (Singapore) Aria (Montreal), Folis Pigalle, RedLight, The Rex & FatKat (France) The Roxy & Summer of Love (Czech Republic) The Bomb, Turnmills and of course Layo and Mr C’s club The End (UK)… to name but a few.

Nathan has also aquired a reputation as an excellent producer, having built up an essential portfolio of House and Breaks releases on labels such as Loaded, Visitor, Plank, 10 Kilo, Household, The End, Eukahouse and Funk’d (offshoot of Jamayka), picking up critical acclaims such as ‘Essential Release of The Month’ for his and Nils Hess’s “Get Fucked” albums. He has worked with the best, such as Mathew Bushwaka! Nils Hess, Asad Rizvi(Two Right Wrongans), Gareth Oxbey and Terry Francis. And remixes for Hardfloor, Kurtis Blow, DJ Pierre and most recently the acclaimed Will Saul track ‘I got rhythm’ reaching no. 3 in DJ Magazine’s Breakbeat charts and appearing on his new album “Give me a Break”, on 10 Kilo.Having recently built a studio at his home in London, and on his 4th release with his new label “Is This”, Nathan thankfully shows no signs of slowing down. Like a fine wine he surely gets better with age, where his ability to read a crowd, taste in music and flawless mixing abilities never cease to amaze and astound.

Saturday night brings Brighton boy Casper C (Fluo Kids) back to his roots from the big Smoke and gay Paris to launch the seaside version of his Camden social club, Bloggers Delight, absolutely free for your delectation at Audio this Saturday.

The night sees a dj set from Friendly Fires, complementing resident pair Skull Juice (Benedict Solo Set) and NikNikNik (Bloggers Delight).

The six-hour fun-a-thon is part of their month-long party to celebrate their third year of existence – Brighton is but part of a long chain of cities, with musically-hedonistic parties burning in London, Paris (Social Club), and Bristol (Start the Bus), with guests including Joakim, Optimo, Noob, Alexander Robotnick, Matt Walsh and the Friendly Fires!

Next month: Saturday June 6th, Noob (Form/Turbo), Casper C, NikNikNik

They say:

WHAT IS IT? : Founded by Brighton-born DJ, and member of the hugely popular music blog Fluokids, Casper C, and fellow bloggers Skull Juice, Blogger’s Delight was initially a Sunday evening gathering of like-minded souls at the legendary Lock Tavern pub in Camden Town. From this humble base, an instant impression was made with a sucession of guests such as Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, Duke Dumont, Brodinski, Yuksek, Herve and Sinden making early appearances in the 100 capacity ‘Small Disco’.

3 years on, the blogging has curtailed, but the name has stuck! Still residing at The Lock, with regular appearances at Paris Social Club, Fabric’s Room 3, and a stage at Field Day Festival, the time felt right to set up base at Brighton’s best nightclub experience, Audio, in order to spread the good word that little bit further. The monthly residency will showcase the clubbier end of the Blogger’s musical pallette, from disco-house to fresh electro and a tough, techno edge.

10:00pm-4:00am

Bio from Tim Green’s Myspace: In 2008 few names have made the kind of impact on the worlds house and techno scenes as 24 year old Tim Green. Originally from Kent and now based in London Tim’s production talents have seen him release music through some of the worlds most respected labels, and gaining major plaudits from the likes of Ritchie Hawtin, Sven Vath, Pete Tong, Tiga, Josh Wink, Carl Cox, Locodice, Nic Fanciulli, Dubfire, Steve Lawler, Anja Schneider, Slam, Damian Lazerus, Tiefschwarz, Laurent Garnier, MANDY, Lee Burridge, Agoria to name a few. Add to that a string of high profile remixes and dj gigs across the globe and it’s not hard to see why so many people are talking about Tim as a future star.

Tim’s ascendancy to the spotlight started in 2006/7 when he released singles under the name TG for such renowned labels such as FourTwenty, Infant & Fling, and even getting remixed by the likes of Martin Buttrich, Jamie Jones & Konrad Black. Fast forward to the beginning of 2008 Tim took the decision to start recording under his own name, Tim Green as well as TG. The fruits of his production stints were some of the most interesting and forward thinking music on the planet. Interest has come from far and wide for this young prodigy. but Claude Von Stroke was first to capitalize by signing his dance floor bomb ‘Revox’ to his highly acclaimed Dirtybird imprint. The track went onto become the one of the labels biggest releases of 2008. Next up German based Trapez records, easily one of the most respected techno labels on the planet, picked up Tim’s dirty vocal anthem Mr. Dry which was released in August 08. Within the first week of its release, Mr Dry climbed to number one in the top 10 minimal charts on Beatport. Mr. Dry went onto become one of the biggest techno anthems of 2008, being played from Fabric to Watergate, Space to Womb. If that wasn’t enough legendary UK imprint Renaissance promptly signed Tim for a series of singles, the first of which was again released to acclaim in October 08, with the tracks ‘Creature’ & ‘Give It A Go’ again showcasing the versatility of his production.

Tim also embarked on a slew of high profile remixes during this time for the likes of Cr2 records, Southern Fried, Fling, Phoebic & Viva. As well as 2 huge remixes, firstly Steve Lawler’s 21st Century Ketchup single on Dubfires Sci-Tec as well as The Audio Bully’s latest single ‘Flickery Vision’. Again these mixes became a staple diet in many of the world’s top djs record boxes for most of the year.

The impact Tim has made hasn’t gone un-noticed by the dance music press either, with Tim being names a ‘Player Of The Year’ In I-DJ magazines end of year summary into all things good in 2008, whilst DJ magazine nominated Tim for ‘Best Breakthrough Producer’ in their ‘Best Of British’ Awards.

So in just over 2 years, Tim has risen to working with the biggest djs and labels on the planet, and we haven’t even mentioned his DJing yet! Tim has been found destroying dancefloors over recent times at some of the worlds best clubs such as Fabric, The End, The Egg & Retox in London, Stealth in Nottingham, The Custard Factory Birmingham, Circus in Liverpool, Watergate, Tresor & The Weekend Club in Berlin, The Hive in Zurich, Studio 80 in Amsterdam as well as well as many more of the world’s best parties.

The Blah Blah Blah boys had Fake Blood Digital only a few weeks and now comes the news that A-Trak is coming just before Easter. He’ll be here on Thursday 9th April. What’s even better is the next day is a bank holiday so people don’t have to work the next day.

So who is he anyway? There seems to be three sections to who A-Trak is. First he was DMC Champion when he was 15 and basically won everything and retired from the DJ battle scene a few years later. Then he landed the job as Kanye West’s DJ which saw his profile rise even more and now in the last few years he’s moved away from the scene but still drops some hip-hop and showcases his scratching skills during his sets. He even has his own label, Fool’s Gold!

He’s got a Fabric CD dropping a few days before the gig at Digital and a another mix album on Thrive Records in America that’s just come out so he’s been busy. That’s before mentioning that he just did 9 gigs in 3 days in Miami at WMC.

He’s only doing a handful of UK dates so make sure you catch him and £9 is a bargain to see this guy!!

Check out the Blah Blah Blah blog for more info on the show and to keep up with A-Trak check out his website/blog, Myspace and Twitter.

A different reviewer, a different night. Check out the last review from June: Joe Ransom

This is going to be an impressively short review, folks, but I won’t apologise for that. Three clubs, two after parties, and three reviews – all in one weekend. I spent all of Sunday, as you can imagine, in bed. And then there was Supercharged on the Wednesday following just when I was starting to feel a little bit too sensible…

On Friday night, I made my way to the Volks after the Speedway5 gig on foot, leaving Polar Central on Queens Road and cutting down Middle Street towards the seafront. People, I’ve learned a valuable lesson, which I’m going to pass on to you: always take taxis. Always. I don’t care if you don’t have any money. Beg for change on your local street corner until you have enough. Dig around your bedroom for every 2p you can find. Hell, steal 5ps from your best friend. I don’t care how you do it, just don’t put yourself in the traumatic experience of walking alone in the middle of town on a Friday night. Drunk wild faces leered out of car windows as I pushed through the sharp wind blowing off the sea. Even though it was early, I watched as a city of call centre workers and labourers made a quick, efficient, and devastatingly obscene descent into the freedom of Friday. Bolted drinks at O’Neills and Wetherspoons made groups of people walk like monkeys as they passed along the Madeira parade route for the “Festival of the Idiot-Minus-the-Savants”. This parade was ugly – they were no costumes. A modern girl at heart, I of course don’t believe in exercise for any reason; clearly, I was a fool.

A recent survey indicated that the Volks have some of the city’s nicest bouncers. And I agree. The four standing at the door all gave me a cheery hello and didn’t bother to check my bag, which if they had, they would have found a nice big bottle of Captain Morgan’s dark rum to confiscate. At 10.30pm , the club was reasonably busy. I went up to the bar to buy a coke and ran into two actors who were in my first feature film. Iris, a Spanish actress, played the lead female role, and Dan, a comic genius who played the main character’s best friend. It was nice to have some unexpected catch ups to start the evening.

Some confusion over the line up: “I heard Howie B isn’t playing tonight.”

“Really? Oh shit.”

“He isn’t meant to. That’s the next night.”

“Oh.”

The main DJ for the night was not Howie B, as assumed by some, but Joe Ransom, resident DJ for Fabric Live in London . With a five year residency under his belt, Ransom was returning to Brighton , and more importantly, to Flawless. I’ve heard from sources that Ransom will be mixing it up more often as he is now one of Flawless’s new residents. If only I’d known it wasn’t just going to be a breaks night…

I was looking for a dark corner to do my cocktail mixing in when Joel, one of the Slacker’s DJs and his girlfriend waved me over, where they were sitting at a table near the entrance. A dark corner, friends to chat to – ideal. I flung my coat behind us and splashed some rum in my glass. My friends thought I was reckless, but I shrugged. Who wants to spend £5 a drink? Barney and his friends soon came over as we waited for the club to get busier and, it seemed, for the music to change from ragga. Barney informed me that he read my last review, which implicated him in a few minor criminal acts, and I nervously asked him if he minded me using his real name. He laughed and waved me off – “Naw, that’s fine,” he said. “I thought it was funny actually. But there was one thing you HAVE TO CHANGE.” I leaned forwards apprehensively. “What?” I asked him. “My name,” he said. “It’s Barney with an –ey. You have to change it. Don’t ask me why it’s so important.” I’m not in the business of protecting the innocent, only writing what happens – spelling people’s names right is a reasonable request. If I spell your name wrong, let me know. Just for the record.

For the first hour, this table was where we held court: it served as the primary converging point, the lookout point from which we picked out friends from the stream of friends walking past. Jason and Cat, Jez and Claire, Jamie, Tiff. Even the Speedway 5 lot came down to relax after their gig. Several drinks in, me, Simon and Ela ran off to the dancefloor, as Joe Ransom began his set. The music so far was good. A disco-tinged deep house tune was playing, and Simon and I looked up at the speaker. We awaited the inevitable change of genre. “It sounds like it’s gonna go to disco,” I decided. Simon agreed. “Or breaks.” Simon grinned – “I’d like to see it go to breaks. That would be interesting.”

A good club night is a combination of many things; for me, it’s good friends and good music. Both are important, and though you can have one without the other, it’s more important to have a balance of the two. For several factors, some of them beyond the Flawless team’s control, that night was not the best I’ve had. On the plus side, I did my one good deed of the evening (what seems like every evening) in sourcing drugs for some friends. I shared my rum with many (but obviously not enough judging from my hangover the next morning) of my friends. I had a few enjoyable dances compliments of some good mixes provided by Ransom. Downstairs, I got my fill of old school hiphop with the always irreverent, out of control party DJs, Sick lil Monkees.

On the downside, I found that most of my friends were smashed beyond comprehension. Most of the night felt like an exercise in seeing my friends disintegrate. The general crowd upstairs felt a little random and disparate, as though people found themselves in there by mistake and had never heard of any musical genre besides drum n bass. I made the fatal mistake in wearing a wool skirt and a suede boots (schoolboy error?), which is not conducive to clubbing. As a result, I quickly got too hot and alternated between the floors to cool down.

There was a thread of sadness that ran through the night for me, mainly because everyone I knew was affected by the recent death of a friend, and drunkness on this evening was a remorseful escape rather than a vehicle of fucked up-ness. There were times when I wasn’t sure about the music – mind you, Ransom had some blindingly good moments – but overall I felt like the set was a warm-up for something else. Which, perhaps at the Volks, never came. Lights went on at two, and for some, that was it. For me, it was the after party, annoying my friends at 5 in the morning, pizza, then sleep. Oh yeah, did I tell you I was taken hostage by 8 Estonian performance artists recently? Some people, it seems, just don’t see the irony. I guess it was just one of those nights.

Final word: By the end, Ransom had the crowd rapped around his finger. They were loving it. Get your taxi fare sorted, wear the right clothes, and go check out the next Flawless night – Howie B – on Friday 28 th October 2005 . Same place, same time, and if you just can’t get it together, Flawless are on every 2 nd and 4 th Fridays of the month at the Volks. No excuses.
