Hosting the speakeasy’s turntables, we’re honoured to welcome veteran Audio DJ Mex (Black Grass), who’ll be spinning his peerless selection of deep soul, hip-hop, disco and quality party anthems.

Terrace // Heading outside, our terrace hosts a very special 1920’s Cigar & Liqour Bar, where a full live jazz band will be on hand to entertain guests while they sample premium spirits and enjoy fine cigars at our walk-in art deco humidor. Whatever the weather, our fully-heated marquee ensures that the Above Audio Liqour & Cigar Bar will be the classiest smoking area in town this NYE.

Audio // As you’d expect, we’ve put together a killer line-up for the downstairs club. Local hero Cagedbaby takes a break from touring, remixing and producing Fatboy Slim (among many others) to drop one of his killer electro-disco-house sets. He’s joined by Riva Starr, one of the most talked-about talents in house right now, whose releases for Jesse Rose’s Frontroom label and Fatboy Slim’s Southern Fried have catapulted him to club stardom. Support comes from Enzo Siffredi, whose cutting edge tech-house and signature minimal has made Audio clubnight Minimal Kids one of the biggest new parties of the year. Accompanying the sounds, we’ve commissioned some unique old-school video footage, including live real-time manipulation of video shot at the party itself.

The Field delivered a cracking early show at Brighton’s Audio on Wednesday. So much so that it left me feeling annoyed at having to go home in preparation for work the next day. It’s sad I know but the pain of midweek adventures outweighs the pleasures these days. This would have been a perfect Friday / Saturday slot filler… the hour long gig could have so easily have fitted into an entire night.

Fun on the run: a shot from Playgroup

Okay, I’ll admit it: when I first got an inkling about Beachdown going kapput on Tuesday night I wasn’t at all gutted. Call me a scrooge, but I didn’t fancy forking out to go rough it on the Downs just so I could spend two or three days watching my friends get munted in the same way they do every weekend.

Bands? What bands? Yeah, you get my drift.

Living in Brighton, with the dirty pebbled beach right on our backdoor, life feels like a permanent camping blowout anyways .

So with no great plans to crush like human-sized jenga construction made of shreddies, this weekend’s musical lineup is like manna from heaven. Oh what, all of the bands that can’t play at Beachdown are now playing in town? Perfect.

Just in case you’re stuck for a plan, here are the biggest and bravest of the choice for your musical pleasure.

FRIDAY:

Playgroup take over Hector’s House for their own mini-festival Funk Beachdown, sharing their festival-tinged love to masses, who will no doubt be streaked with face paint and come bearing straw strategically placed in hair.  It’s free fun.

They’re throwing the doors open at 4pm, just in case you don’t work, and it kicks out at 2am.

They say:  ”It’s not windy, the drinks are cheaper and there’s no sign of Grace Jones – although we did have a call asking if she could play. We said no…”

Meanwhile, over at Audio, Beardyman & JFB’s ever popular Battlejam presents an interesting night of live drum n bass with Jungle Drummer and DJ Fu, along with Mr Jean Marc himself and breaks DJ James D’ley. Apparently Jungle Drummer can drum at 180bpm for two solid hours. Seen to be believed I think.

SATURDAY:

SCHTUMM! are manning the reign’s of Audio’s free night, Summer Of Love, with a guest so special, they’re keeping the identity of said famous person a secret. Hm. I wonder who it could be?

Better than a secret, they’ve pulled in Jon of the FC Kahunu brother fame, which should be pretty nifty as he hasn’t played in Brighton for a while.  Five hours of house, electro and I reckon some sneaky techno for those of you who like it that way. 11pm – 4am, free.

Meanwhile, over at New Hero, there’s It is still 1985. How can I not push a night that ticks all of the right boxes for me:  ”hair metal, mega movie tracks, pop masterpeices, epic power ballads and more…”. And Karate Kid. 10pm-4am, 3 quid. All good.

Also, KLIKS are having the totally fabulous MIA and Alex Smoke at their making-up-for-the-loss-that-was-beachdown, at LIFE. It’s free if you’ve got a Beachdown ticket, 5 quid if not.

Kliks – Brighton’s original stripped back techno night will be hosting an event at this year’s Beachdown Festival. Famed for bringing some of the main players of minimal techno to Brighton, they return with another stunning lineup. Started in 2003 by Brighton based journalist Lee Smith, Mark Lerman and Tom Ridsdale their events soon gained a level of notoriousness. Kliks started before the “minimal” media hype and wasn’t led by jumping on to trends.

In 2009 their concept and sound is often imitated but never pulled off with the same conviction. While other promoters and events have turned minimal in to a dirty soiled word, Kliks are the light at the end of the tunnel. It’s an odd sight when venues such as Audio put on nights aimed directly at a supposedly “in” market – from flyer design, music and concept it just doesn’t work as well as Kliks.

The Kliks event, along with Laurent Garnier Live are certainly the main things which make Beachdown festival worthwhile.

MIA (Biog from MySpace)

Mia, who left her old homebase Cologne in mid-2004 to resettle in Berlin, is neither to be confused with the most recent Grime hype from the UK, nor the popular german rock band. In the mid-90’s Mia first takes her place behind the turntables. She gets to minimal techno and the likes in Cologne quite quickly, and develops a great reputation for her emotional, spunky DJ sets inside the local underground, within just a few years.

Daniel Bell (Biog from Wikipedia)

Daniel Bell is an American minimal techno DJ. He was born in Sacramento, California, but grew up outside of Toronto, Canada, and later moved to Detroit where he collaborated with Richie Hawtin as Cybersonik for three years on Plus 8 records. In 1991, he started his own label, Accelerate, where he released a string of influential releases as DBX.

Bell was influenced primarily by Chicago House as well as the works of Steve Reich and Philip Glass. His productions are characterized by minimalist house grooves accented by blips and bleeps. Some tracks also feature bizarre voice effects and eerie atmospherics such as 1994’s delay driven “Losing Control”.

Alex Smoke (Biog from Soma)

Glaswegian based artist Alex Smoke recently released his second album, ‘Paradolia’ on Soma Records. Paradolia is defined as the human ability to creatively perceive coherent images in randomness. This is an unusual word by anyone’s standard but then Alex Menzies (aka Mr Smoke) is an artist very far from the usual. A Rorschach test this is not, more a sonic experiment that explores the parameters of Alex Smoke’s potent psyche.

A Guy Called Gerald (Biog from NME)

Gerald Simpson, 16 February 1967, England. Simpson’s solo career has failed to ignite as many predicted, although he remains a maverick and influential presence on the UK’s dance music scene. Simpson, who once sold copies of the left-wing newspaper Socialist Worker on the streets of Manchester, England, first recorded with the Scratchbeat Masters (who included Nicky Lockett, the future MC Tunes) before joining the Hit Squad. The latter mutated into the seminal 808 State, but Simpson left following a dispute over writing credits for what would prove to be the group’s breakthrough hit, “Pacific State”. His most notable contribution to the UK’s fledgling dance scene was “Voodoo Ray”, which reached number 55 in April 1989 before re-entering at number 12 two months later. Those statistics barely reflect the reverence with which it came to be regarded on the club scene.

Lee Smith (Biog from Kliks)

One of the UK’s foremost supporters of minimal house and techno, Lee has been DJing for 13 years. He founded Brighton’s notorious Hideout party in 1998, playing alongside guests including Dave Clarke, Ben Sims, Green Velvet, Funk D’Void, Richie Hawtin, Magda, Josh Wink, Layo & Bushwacka, Carl Craig, Derrick May, and many more, before forming Kliks in 2003. Kliks rapidly gained a reputation as a genuinely pioneering party, hosting the likes of Steve Bug, Alex Smoke, Kompakt records and numerous others, and is now regarded as one of the most important underground club nights in the UK.

Mark Lerman (Biog from Kliks)

Mark Lerman’s first forays into music began with his involvement with a clutch of punk bands in and around Leeds and Bradford during the early nineties, before relocating to London and promoting a host of underground techno parties at venues across the capital. Upon moving to Brighton, he gained a residency at Hideout, the town’s only dedicated night for techno at the time, and went on to help establish the club as one of the most important and long-running parties of its kind. Alongside Jack Gillies, he founded Hidden recordings, an outlet for his own twisted take on minimal techno, before starting Kliks with Lee Smith and Tom Ridsdale in 2003.

Now touching on a previous post from Marek on venues’ lack of self promotion online, I am not sure how out in the domain this little gem of information is? I had not heard of the venue let alone his gig, if it were not for interviewing him recently whilst moonlighting on another blog site…

So JAM is the old Water Margin/Sumo which translates to a place where they occasionally have some great dj’s and bands but a venue that has sadly never really had a voice on the scene here. Looking up said venue reveals nothing and the only confirmation of its existence is listings on the Great Escape site and Nathan’s own.

Fake’s first record came out when he was 18, the infamous “Drowning in a Sea of Love” and the tour supporting this propelled him into the sphere of nightclubs, DJ booths across the land and the world soon after – something that has certainly has tainted his new LP. “Hard Islands” features six tracks of hard-edged, electronica techno. This may come as a bit of a surprise to the fans of the synths and fake guitar riffs from his previous offerings but the evolution is seamless.

I was first introduced to Fake at Kliks, the minimal/techno night who has local techno boy wonder Lee Smith at the helm (see our review from a couple of years ago) so I was delighted to get an email on Facebook from the Kilks club announcing:

Those proper DJs out there who use vinyl will remember Alex from the hugely missed – Covert Records. Alex had been peddling vinyl for the best part of 10 years to any DJs who were into ‘proper’ House & Techno.

As a DJ Alex has shared the bill with some of the biggest acts in Techno – Richie Hawtin, Jeff Mills, Josh Wink, Carl Cox, Carl Craig, Derrick May, Surgeon and The UR posse amongst many others.

Alex’s style behind the turntables defies categorization. For him techno isn’t a dogma so much as a spirit of electronic freedom to adapt and embrace new styles. Where techno can drift into boys own head-nod territory, Alex makes the girls forget its a techno night and get wigglin’, and lets the boys dance instead of shuffling or pogo-ing. Tech-house, techno, deep house, minimal, electro, yes, they’re all in the mix, but were talking a serious throbbing rhythm, not bang-bang-bang; were talking disco-dancing with attitude. “The original Detroit techno guys wanted to make computer music that had warmth, humanity and soul”, Alex explains, “and I think sometimes DJs today can forget that. Its a very forward-thinking music and its about to have a renaissance”.

Lee Smith
A permanent fixture on Brighton’s club scene, Lee Smith is one of the UK’s foremost supporters of minimal house and techno. Cutting his teeth at Eddie Richards’ famed Dy-Na-Mix DJ agency at the age of 16, he went on to bag a coveted position at Brighton’s esteemed Covert Records upon moving to the city to study. Along with Mark Lerman, he founded Hideout at Brighton’s dingy Volks in 1998, where he booked and played alongside guests including Dave Clarke, Derrick May, Carl Craig, Green Velvet, Richie Hawtin, Magda, Anthony Rother, Billy Nasty, Ben Sims, Colin Dale, Eddie Richards and Dave Mothersole.

In 2003, he started Kliks as an outlet for the emerging sounds of so-called ‘minimal’ European labels and the night rapidly established itself as one of the most exciting underground parties of its kind. Booking DJs and acts who (at that time) could only be heard at a handful of clubs throughout the UK, Kliks went on to provide numerous UK debuts and exclusive performances from guests including: Tobias Thomas (Kompakt), Mia and Falko Brocksieper (Sub-Static), Beatschubiger (Boxer Sport), Heib (Auftrieb), Jake Fairley, Triple R and Steve Barnes (Traum/Trapez), Jeremy Caulfield (Dumb-Unit), Steve Bug, Alex Smoke, Metope (Areal), Craig Richards, The Modernist (Kompakt), DJ Koze, Frivolous (Karloff), Nathan Fake, James Holden, Konrad Black (Wagon Repair), and Magda.

Lee is currently residing in Berlin so this short trip back could be a rare opportunity to catch one of Brightons ambassadors of real music – back in town.

We going to keep this one short and sweet. Hope you enjoy the photos and that everyone had a good evening.

It’s the first Kliks of the year and there’s certainly no better way to kick it off then a visit from Cologne’s melodic lady Ada. Shockingly, It really has been a while since we’ve been down to Audio. Damn busy hibernating over the Christmas period and striding through the most mundane of months January. It may already be February but a lot was hanging on this night to provide a good Audio kick start to 2008.

We have previously mentioned that Audio has gone through a few changes. Most importantly the moving of its signature night Stompa Phunk. The boys in suits have clearly been reading their NME’s closely and realised that dance music is just not as “cool” as it once was. Bands are in further than fists in dodgy German porn, thus bands and I cringe with the term “neu rave” equals dosh. Such a shame that SP is no longer a weekly option, it’s really a big loss for Brighton. Alas things are not completely hopeless for die hard fans. They are embarking on a range of other projects – recently having brought Darren Emerson to the Concorde and there’s definitely more goodies to come. For now we can be happy, we still have a choice of SP and Kliks.

We rolled into Audio to Mark Lerman warming up the crowd, although the venue was not full it didn’t dampen the atmosphere. Anwar mentioned he was on first and that people danced from the second they came in. None of those types who lurk round the edges till it picks up. Time rolled along and many drinks had been sank, 1:30 dropped and it was time for Ada to take control.

The crowd looked on while the music stopped completely and a few cables needed adjusting to incorporate Ada’s equipment. The beat starts up to a usual Audio reception. Ada offered something different to many of Audio’s usual DJ’s, in fact I’m not sure we should technically be calling her a DJ at all. Most folks just swing by Audio, lay some records, CD’s or plug in a laptop with Ableton – not in this case. Ada’s equipment was far more live production orientated then a standard jocks. She wasn’t playing other peoples records, she was showcasing her own music and abilities. The poor girl must carry a mini studio along with her to every gig. She had an IBM ThinkPad, a Yamaha mg12/4fx mixer, ESX-1 – Electribe SX sampler and a retro styled MicroKORG Synth to boot. The point here is we are dealing with a real musician. I’m sure if the environment was more suited she’d be more then keen to add her own live vocals. Not exactly great in a club with everyone screaming.

I’ll be the first to admit that I didn’t take to her Blondie album as much as other people, but live is another issue all together. To experience someone live is to see what it partly takes for them to do what they do. And from that point of view the crowd got a feast.

Now we all now that photographers are cunts, myself included, all the flashing and general annoyance of others, but Ada must have had some special stuff going down on her laptop. The minute I started taking shots she slammed down her screen. Maybe I should apologise now to everyone I’ve taken shots of before (too many). I probably wouldn’t want some cunt pointing a camera in my face. Sorry.

So when end of the year rolls around, I don’t think of tax returns and new year’s resolutions – I think about the important things in life: what music rocked my world.

2007 was a great year for “going out” for music.

Brighton played host to an exciting number of music activities, from festivals to club nights to all-dayers, with both new faces and old hands on board. Suddenly there were loads of new nights to go to, and I felt spoiled for choice.

New Kids on the Block? PlayGroup, Beat Circus, On The House, Strawberry Social, Pollen, Somewhere in the Universe, Gangster Music for Indie Kids, Pointbreaks [editor's note: 2007 was the year these nights showed up on my radar - PlayGroup actually started in 06 -oops!]

New Festivals: Loop, Brighton City Festival, Frequency Festival

Of course, I’m also thinking of all the good music that I came across this year, and who knows all the track names that pleasantly haunt my sleep better than DJs?

Brightonians “love their music”, but as tastes can vary wildly, I asked DJs from different nights to give us their Top 10 for 2007.

Some DJ lists included songs that made the heavens shake at their night but were actually released in previous years, while others gave lists of their personal favorite tunes of those released in the year. Either way, these nights showed us Brighton people a helluva good time, and any release year you cut, it doesn’t really matter.

After celebrating their first birthday, Playboys threw a massive free party for New Year’s Eve at both Hectors House and Pressure Point. Free party with a curfew?

Cut Loose is a monthly night at the Volks Tavern that plays drum ‘n’ bass, old skool jungle, and ragga. The night puts on mighty big names including the legendary 4Hero, Tayo, XX to name a few, and are supported by roster of powerhouse residents. A good night minus the chavs.

Kliks is a monthly night at Audio. Kliks helped turn Brighton clubbers on to fine minimalist techno nearly a decade ago and continues to import techno DJs from France, Germany and the world for our listening pleasure. Clubbing in Cologne minus the flight.

Well I have. Were you ever the kid who used to dig a really big hole and then just sit in it? It’s funny that at a much older age you find yourself doing pretty much the same thing. And if the hole is even big enough then fuck, maybe you won’t be able to climb out. So you are left there, sitting, gazing while some cunt of a Lifeguard starts telling you off because it could cave in any second. And boom, that’s it, It’s Saturday morning and your stuck under this motherfucker pile of sand. Its 7am and you’re up to over your waist with no chance in hell of getting your feet out – alas you try. You walk like John Cleese, in the Ministry of Funny walks – yet less funny and overwhelmingly overcome buy the weight of that fucking sand.

Sand aside – Magda delivered as expected. The last time someone in the Fusion circle saw Magda was the Fusion festival down in Berlin last month. And before you get excited no, we didn’t put on a festival in Germany, the name is a coincidence. Great set there and can’t be faulted in Brighton. Last time she was down here was back in February and it’s great to see her back on pebbled soil. Previously she was down playing for the Bleeps parties and now for Brighton’s Kliks. Both similar nights in aspect and offering a great deal to Brighton’s no always active scene. Sadly Bleeps is on a backburner at the moment, possibly while it’s Bleepetes work on production and other projects. Kliks have offered Brighton a touch of something different, with; Magda, Nathan Fake, Alex Smoke Dj Koze, the Modernist, Craig Richards and Frivolous to name a few artists – in only the past 5 months or so. Bringing artists which at times could be more at home on a German flyer to our turf has to be something to really appreciate. It’s this which is partly a factor that sets Brighton aside from other salty beach-bound shit holes. We are surrounded by quality artists and when some of the world’s best come to play in what can be described as moderately small venues you know you are onto a winner. It’s good to see promoters pushing boundaries and booking artists that maybe for some would be unknown yet guaranteed to keep a party moving.

Lee Smith, 1 half of the Kliks team along side Mark Lerman, recently took the time to do Brighton Fusion’s July mix session. A solid mix encapsulating the Kliks club vibe… provides a great way to set the mood for the night ahead.

Starting with her DJ style straight down to her personality. Plus she’s fucking hot., always a bonus. So people, please, pack-up your tents, tell Tiesto that he’s a cunt and come to Brighton. We show you good time.
